6 May 1957: GTV9 debuts variety show In Melbourne Tonight, hosted by 3UZ radio announcer Graham Kennedy. The show was loosely modelled on the American tonight show concept, heavy on talk and interviews, with some influence from the popular 3DB variety show The Happy Gang. The latter became more apparent when Kennedy found he wasn’t much of an interviewer and worked better with variety and comedy skits.

IMT of course became a TV legend and went for 13 years. Kennedy became known as “the King” and the show established Nine as the leader in TV variety for the decades to follow.

13 May 1968: HSV7 debuts two new daytime series. A soap opera, Motel, based around a fictional motel located somewhere between Canberra and Sydney. The series was made in Sydney but debuted in Melbourne two weeks before it did in Sydney.

The other show was Marriage Confidential, which presented re-enactments of marriage counselling sessions loosely based on real-life cases.

Neither series lasted all that long. Motel became another failed attempt by Seven to get a daytime soap off the ground.

NRN10 began on 23 January 1965. It changed shortly after to NRN11 as it appeared that the 10 signal was being impacted by interference

Was the interference because of TEN-10 Sydney?

Hmm, not sure.

I’d imagine occasionally receiving Sydney TV in Coffs Harbour (or visa versa) during a major Summer DXing event would’ve been possible on analogue, but not on a regular basis and probably impossible in this digital-only era!

The reason NRN10 had to change to Channel 11 was due to interference from ABRN6 Lismore in the Grafton region. Totally different channels but the oscillators in TV’s in Grafton tuned to Channel 6 caused interference to TV’s tuned to Channel 10. This is why back in the old days Channel 6 and Channel 10 couldn’t be allocated in the same or nearby areas.

Thought it would be worth noting this: On December 16, 2016 7HD became a simulcast of Seven in all markets, mostly due to the backlash the AFL-based decision had received. There was previously a small switch throughout their 2016 Olympics coverage to the main channel months prior. Ironically, Seven currently has standalone MPEG-4 HD versions of both Seven and 7mate.

I recall TV Blackbox mentioning the switch was for the tennis season only, but then it was the same site that reported MTV was-to-be Ten’s third multichannel so I’m not judging it.

From what I recall, Seven still occasionally switched LCN-70 to 7mateHD in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth (don’t think such as switch ever happened in Sydney or Brisbane after 2016) for HD coverage of key AFL matches in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Of course these days all five metro markets and regional Queensland receives HD versions of both Seven’s main channel and 7mate, but everywhere else only has either the main channel or 7mate in HD.

18 May 2019: The Federal election coverage was underway and the pundits were all predicting a Labor win, except one.

“There’s no way that Scott Morrison can win it and I’m happy to have that replayed time and time again to my shame if he does win it." -Ten political editor Peter van Onselen.

“Bill Shorten will be Prime Minister for the next three years”. -Nine’s Peter Overton.

“I’m expecting it to fall around 81 (seats for Labor). I’m basing that on things I’ve heard from people who should know”. -The Project’s Waleed Aly.

“I can’t see where the seats are there in numbers for Labor”. -Alan Jones, dressed in a bright green suit, on Seven’s election coverage.

20 May 1991: TEN-10 moves to improve poor ratings in the 6-7pm timeslot by returning to the proven one hour, two anchor news format. Katrina Lee returns to the TEN news desk accompanied by John Mangos. The duo are heavily promoted in the lead up to the debut of the revamped hour news with promos shot in the Brisbane newsroom on a set that bears no resemblance to the new set constructed in TEN’s Broadway headquarters.

In Melbourne they brought back Jo Pearson after her years being warehoused by Nine, to sit again next to David Johnston. They did the same promos as Katrina Lee and John Mangos did above. I remember seeing the ads thinking there was going to be a new set. And it never happened

EDIT: Just found a 15-second version of the Melbourne promo.

23/5/2014 Wake Up, and the Ten Eyewitness News Early, Morning and Late News bulletins all air for the final time before their axings due to low ratings and revenue.

That left only the flagship 5:00pm bulletin as their only news service. So much for Ten’s “News Revolution” rolled out in 2011!
