On This Day

Had the new Darwin digital channel been allowed to be a Ten affiliate, there wouldn’t be a debacle on January 1, 2003 when NTD dropped most of Ten programming (except AFL), and shows like Neighbours and Australian Idol would not be lost to the Top End until 2005 when it was picked up by Southern Cross Darwin.

By the same token, if NTD was a joint 7-9 outlet there would inevitably be key shows from either network that would be missed out, too. There’s always going to be collateral damage when trying to squeeze three networks into two channels, as we also saw in Tasmania pre-TDT and even in Perth pre-Ten.

Prime’s first program just after midnight is Today (NBC)
WIN’s first program at midnight is a special edition of MTV, live from Canberra.

The second stage, with WIN and Capital extending west, came at the end of the year.

3 April 1987: Don Lane hosts the TV Week Logie Awards from the Hyatt on Collins, Melbourne, and broadcast on Network Ten (and TVW7 in Perth).

Notable for this absolute train wreck of an opening number:

This would be like getting Daryl Somers to host the Logies now wouldn’t it? Such a throwback. Though really, it’d be like Rove hosting based on the dates which is a scary thought.

4 April 2018 - The Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games is held on the Gold Coast.

Has it been 2 years already?

Yes. You can watch the Opening Ceremony in its entirety on 7plus - it’s still there to enjoy.

Channel 7 televised the Games for the first time since 2002. Australia has gone into standard time. The Opening Ceremony did well rating 2 million viewers (metro) with The strongest market being Brisbane. This was much lower than the Melbourne 2006 Games (that was shown on Nine which rated 3.54 million).

13 April 2005 - a blackout at Seven’s Docklands studios knocks out the entire network for about half an hour during an episode of Blue Heelers (or Home and Away in Perth).

Perth viewers got a double episode of H&A the following night while the rest of the country got a double episode of Blue Heelers the following Wednesday.

13 April 1970: ATV0 debuts the 0-10 Network’s first drama series, The Long Arm. It was produced by Ansett Television Films, a sister company to ATV0 owned by Ansett Transport Industries. There was some generous product placement for Ansett brands in the first episode.

ATV0 was forced to dump the series after only 19 episodes after TEN10 in Sydney withdrew its support.

15 April 2018 - the Closing Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games cops plenty of criticism after part of it is not shown on Seven due to MKR, and it is delayed in Adelaide and Perth.

A shambles of an ending to what was otherwise a successful event.

Was that the same closing ceremony the athletes weren’t allowed to?

I remember Joh and Baz ranting about the Closing Ceremony’s organisers on air.

Was delayed in Perth so I missed it thanks to the negative reaction on social media. A terrific event ruined by its conclusion

Though unrelated, I also remember Quarters, Tim Lane and Robert Walls ranting about Sydney’s terrible performance against St Kilda in a match at Telstra Dome halfway through the 2005 season.

In response to the Closing ceremony of the Gold Coast 2018 games. I heard other people on social media saying that some people have left the Metricon Stadium, due to the very bad performances at the Closing Ceremony. Sadly, there was no athletes during the closing ceremony. Instead there were some performers around the place. THe Live Action of the Games was good, however I didn’t watch the closing ceremony because i found it boring to watch. Commentator Basil Zempilas expressed bitter disappointment of the Closing Ceremony stating that the dignatries went for ‘way too long’ and a bit ‘self-indulgent.’ Nevertheless, 1.141 million viewers tuned in to watch the Closing Ceremony on Channel 7.
On this day in 2012. It was a notable event at Nine. Channel Nine unveiled its new on-air presentation. The new on-air presentation had a number of colours (blue, green, yellow, red, orange, purple) for their identity. This on-air presentation was a one-step up from the SEp 2009-Apr 2012 package. As well, the Nine Network premiered The Voice. 2.177 million viewers watched The premiere of The Voice. Darren McMullen was host of the show.
ALso on that night. Hamish Blake won a Gold Logie award
