On This Day

Both Seven and Nine bother on using sections of US news themes as theme infulence.

This was an moment where Seven broke that law.

I didn’t like the new theme of Seven News because I found it very strange and it didn’t reflect Channel 7’s theme. thankfully, Seven reinstated ‘The Mission’.

Also on that day:
24 January 2011: Ten expanded its news output aka The TEN News Revolution. Channel 10 included 6PM with George Negus (which replaced repeats of The Simpsons in its 6pm timeslot) and an extra news bulletin TEN Evening News in its 6:30PM timeslot. As well with this, 10 has refreshed its new theme song.

This was also one of the reason why Eleven launched. While the new channel was a sucess, 10’s attmept at a extended news schudele didn’t work, hence why a descion was later made to swap around Ten Evening News (later Ten News At Six piror to the return of the Simpsons at 6pm) and George Negus, ending with the decision to revamp The Project (I know very little about the original increasion, although I think it was more comedic and not-so light-hearted then). A later plan to expand 10’s news offerings in 2013 failed, but Studio 10 was a sucess and stayed. So we’re got remianders from both “news expansion” sessions, proving that Ten is NOT a network for serious news.

It was originally called The 7PM Project (and originally 1/2 hour) and then extended to an hour and moved to start at 6:30pm (moved to 6:00pm in 2012).

I think it was in 2013 that the show was bumped back to a 6:30pm start, thus going H2H with Today Tonight and ACA for the first half hour.

24 January 1983: Lorraine Bayly, Australia’s favourite TV mum, returns to television in new Crawford period drama Carson’s Law on TEN 10. It would premiere the following day in Melbourne. Set in 1920s Melbourne, Bayly played lawyer Jennifer Carson who is in conflict with misogynist father in law Godfrey Carson, the head of a wealthy family and powerful law firm. The show is acclaimed for its quality and production values. I remember my mother loving this show and getting annoyed with me when I referred to it as Carson’s Bore.

…and sadly, Seven News didn’t learn their lesson in 2016!

And from what I’ve heard before there was no indication that they were going to relaunch. Just straight into the new logo with an ID.

Yep. No fanfare or teasers leading up to it. The ID just appeared straight after the news.

Unlike the logo that would come over a year later.

I wonder if some people thought that it was a porno logo, with the X in it.

25 January 1989: E Street debuts on Ten with a 2-hour episode. Channel 9 sought to rain on the debut with a re-run of perennial favourite The Sound Of Music, which back then was a ratings winner.

Six years today since Nine News refeshed half of their graphics package, a look which would take them until their 2016 relaunch.

Also on the 27th of January in 2014: Mark Ferguson officially took over from Chris Bath as the main presenter of Seven News Sydney.

28 January 1975: ATN7 and HSV7 debut new daytime soapie, Until Tomorrow. The Reg Grundy Brisbane based production is set in the suburbs and features mystery, sex, romance and scandal. The cast includes Ron Cadee as a corner shop keeper, Hazel Phillips as a widowed gossip, Barry Otto, Babette Stephens and John Nash.

Although attendance at ladies lawn bowls days is reported to suffer as viewers become intrigued by the new show, Until Tomorrow does not survive beyond 1975. It is yet another failed attempt by Seven to launch a daytime soap.

29 January 1974: Three years after the “Fight of the Century”, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier meet for what was billed “Super Fight II” in New York City. This, a non title boxing match, was the second of three Ali-Frazier bouts. Ali avenges the loss in “Fight of the Century” by winning in a controversial unanimous decision.

ATN7 carries the bout LIVE with a full replay at 9pm following the The 8.30 News. TCN9 airs a replay at 8.30pm. HSV7 and GTV9 both air the bout LIVE in Melbourne. HSV7 airs a replay at 9pm, GTV9 at 10.30pm.

I’m so jealous! I always wanted one of those to sit alongside my NBC Today coffee mug.

I have very few TV show mugs. I think I picked this one up from the ‘gift shop’ in the Channel 7 audience foyer when I was in the studio audience for the show once.

And while we were sitting in the foyer at HSV7 in Dorcas Street waiting to be let into the studio, the TV in the corner of the room is tuned to Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom… on Channel 10
