On This Day

So did the ABC play replays though this time period? Even with standard games throughout the year?

I was always under the impression HSV7 has exclusive rights in the late 70s/1980s.

ABC was a secondary VFL broadcaster up until 1986. AFAIK ABC had its own cameras and commentators but I don’t think it did any live coverage, was mostly replays.

It changed in 1987 with the Broadcom deal where ABC became the main VFL TV broadcaster (in Victoria), but when Seven regained the rights in 1988 that pretty much ended ABC’s association.

Was this the first community station in Australia?

LINC TV Lismore first opened in December 1991 but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a full-time station though.

i have a feeling CTS or whatever Sydney’s channel was might have been first. But am just going on vague memory there.

Metro TV was the earliest example I could find of community TV in Sydney.. November 1988, but had limited coverage.

Also makes reference to a ‘Television Unlimited’ in Melbourne in April that year?

Melbourne had similar low-powered community TV test transmissions scatted around the city around that time. Television Unlimited, which from memory was based in the western suburbs.
RMITV was test broadcasting from an antenna on top of Doncaster Shoppingtown IIRC.
And Northern Access TV had test transmissions from Preston/West Heidelberg.

RMITV and NAT went on to become some of the founding members of the Melbourne Community Television Consortium, which went on to become Channel 31.
