When it was launched Carols in the Domain was called Temu Carols by Candlelight trying to outdo Melbourne’s famous carols with fancy stuff like Disney and fireworks

Did the ABC and Seven broadcast it nationally around the country from the start?

Given that the early Carols In The Domain events were sponsored by Esso and broadcast on ABC, I think it’s unlikely that they featured any gross commercialisation of Disney.

ABC was first in 1983, but I think there were a couple of years it wasn’t televised at all until Seven took it over in 1988.

A You Tube clip from 1985 shows it was still on the ABC that year. Looks like 1986 and 1987 were not televised.

Always thought this was a strange time to launch a television station… especially when you would expect a Christmas shutdown tomorrow.

I bet the TV retailers loved it, though. Lots of TVs bought for Christmas!

I’d think the owners of the station thought launching it close to Christmas was a Christmas gift to the people of Bendigo. Not the first station to have done that.
