20 April 1996: Network Ten debuts drama series Sweat, the story of students at an Australian school for the athletically gifted. Starring Martin Henderson, Heath Ledger, Inge Hornstra, Melissa Thomas, Tai Nguyen, Tahnie Merrey, Heath Bergersen, Matt Castelli, Mouche Phillips and Paul Tassone.

20 April 1998: Denise Drysdale launches her new weekday variety show, Denise, on the Seven Network.

20 April 2009: The Nine Network debuts Millionaire Hot Seat, a weeknight spin-off from the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire franchise, hosted by Eddie McGuire.

This was one of the very few TV shows Heath would film in Australia before he moved to the US, where his film career flourished.

21/4/2003 The infamous British episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, in which Charles Ingram cheats his way to the top prize of £1,000,000, is shown in the United Kingdom and Australia, under the title Who Wants to Steal a Million?.

In Australia, it replaced a standard episode during the 2003 two-week Easter non-ratings period. From memory, it attracted over 500,00 viewers in each of Sydney and Melbourne.

21 April 1991: To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Anzac campaign, Ten screens a one-hour documentary Gallipoli: The Anzac Legend, narrated by Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell.

21 April 1993: Ernie Dingo hosts the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Charity Gala (Seven), from the Athenaeum Theatre, Melbourne, featuring appearances by Marty Putz, Ross Daniels, Rachel Berger, Greg Championand the musical cabaret The Monte Carlos. Network Ten current affairs host Derryn Hinch presents a two-hour special, The Skase Mirage, featuring exclusive interviews with Christopher Skase, the high-flying businessman turned recluse. Skase had fled Australia four years earlier to Spain after being charged with criminal offences following the collapse of his Qintex empire. He died in Majorca in 2001.

21 April 2004: The Blue Heelers episode Reasonable Doubt, is performed live-to-air.

I remember watching this, from memory they shot a scene outside of the studio and made it look like a dark alley way. There was also a special beforehand too counting down to the live episode

Yes it was filmed live at NEP studios. I believe the Pub and Police station sets were there along with the alleyway outside the studio.

Law & Order did a live show the year prior. I believe that’s where Seven got the idea from.

The Bill did a live episode in 2003, and Coronation Street had done one a few years before then. They seemed to be all the rage at that time!

28 April 1969: Melbourne’s ATV0 premieres its morning show Fredd Bear’s Breakfast A Go-Go, with Fredd Bear (Tedd Dunn), Judy Banks, Michael McCarthy and Colin McEwan. The show, a mix of cartoons, serials, interviews and sketches, ran for three years.

28 April 1970: On the eve of the 200th anniversary of Captain Cook’s arrival at what is now the east coast of Australia, ABC screens the docu-drama The Infinite Pacific, presenting a re-enactment of Captain Cook’s expedition, which ultimately ended with his death in Hawaii. The special, also featuring reporter Richard Oxenburgh, was filmed in Australia, Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, Tonga and San Francisco.

29 April 1970: The 200th anniversary reenactment of Captain James Cook’s arrival at the east coast of Australia is telecast by ABC, and relayed via all three commercial networks and watched by an estimated two million viewers.

29 April 1979: The first of 13 episodes of test programs from the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) broadcast on ABC. The programs were the precursor to the establishment of a permanent multicultural television service from SBS:

29 April 1985: The Nine Network debuts mini-series The Flying Doctors, starring Andrew McFarlane, Lorna Patterson, Maurie Fields, Val Jellay, Vikki Hammond, Steve Bisley and Max Cullen. The success of the mini-series leads to an ongoing series of the same name that runs for seven years. The Flying Doctors was produced by Crawfords Australia and sold well overseas.

29 April 1991: ABC presents the debut of The Life And Death Of Sandy Stone, featuring the suburbanite character portrayed by Barry Humphries, talking about life in Glen Iris in a series of touching and witty monologues.

29 April 1993: Alan Dale, one of the original Neighbours cast members, makes his final appearance in the series as his character Jim Robinson dies from a heart attack.

29 April 1995: Sydney’s TEN10 presents a one-hour special to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The actual anniversary was actually three weeks beforehand, and the special was buried in a Saturday afternoon timeslot — much like its Melbourne counterpart did a year earlier for its 30th. Later, on Seven, the much-anticipated sports game show Gladiators finally makes its debut — featuring four contestants (two male, two female) up against the super-fit squad of gladiators in a series of survival of the fittest events.

29 April 1996: Andrew Daddo hosts the special 40 Years Of Comedy (Seven), looking at the history of comedy on Australian television, featuring The Mavis Bramston Show, Fast Forward, Dame Edna Everage and The Naked Vicar Show.

29 April 2011: The wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton is broadcast across the ABC, Seven, Nine and Ten networks as well as pay-TV channels Sky News Australia, BBC World News, E!, Fox News, UKTV and CNN.

1 May 1960: The theatre production Seagulls Over Sorrento is adapted to a TV play, performed live to air from the studios of HSV7. The play, directed by Alf Potter, marked Crawford Productions’ first foray into television drama, having produced radio dramas and serials since the 1940s. Appearing in Seagulls Over Sorrento were Bill Hodge, Frank Taylor, Brian James, Don Crosby, Peter Aanensen, Carl Bleazby and Stuart Wagstaff. Many of the cast were reprising their former theatre roles. The 90-minute production was videotaped for later broadcast in other states.
