November 16 2005 The Socceroos qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup after beating Uruguay on penalties at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.
Made up for the heartbreak of 2001.
The Socceroos vs Uruguay match was shown on SBS. 2.484 million metro viewers watched the match via SBS TV. Also, the Socceroos v Uruguay match was the highest ratings program that SBS has recorded.
Suffice to say that 2005 was a huge year for sport in Australia.
The Australian Open men’s final was the most-watched tennis match in the country (to my knowledge) with over 4M viewers tuning in.
The AFL Grand Final that year was the most-watched AFL match in history with 3.4M metropolitan viewers tuning in.
Sydney entered the match as sentimental favourites with the whole of Australia (except WA) on the Swans bandwagon hoping to see them win their 1st flag in 72 years and their 4th overall.
Similarly, the Western Bulldogs entered the 2016 Grand Final as the sentimental favourites (outside of NSW) with so many people hoping to see them end a 62-year drought.
16 November 1979: ATV0 newsreaders Bruce Mansfield and Annette Allison present their last Eyewitness News bulletin. Mansfield had been 0’s chief newsreader since 1974 and Allison had joined the channel in February 1979.

Michael Schildberger and Peter Hanrahan took over as newsreaders for Eyewitness News in a new shorter half-hour format from the following Monday.
Mansfield went on to become ATV0/10’s chief voice over announcer and midday movie host. Allison continued to co-host Everyday with Roy Hampson, the show which became Good Morning Melbourne in 1981.
That was particularly short-lived, wasn’t it? David Johnston came back in 1980, teamed up with Jana Wendt. (Mid-year debut?)
Yeah I think David and Jana started in Feb 1980 and the hour news was reinstated shortly after the sudden axing of Arcade which took up the 6.30 slot
What else did Bruce Mansfield do before joining 3AW?
he was an announcer at 3XY in the 1960s and was a regular on variety shows like IMT and The Graham Kennedy Show and Cartoon Corner (with Daryl & Ossie). He joined ATV0 as weekend newsreader in 1973 and was promoted to weeknights in 1974.
He co-hosted breakfast with John Blackman at 3AW in the early 1980s and then with Darren James. They both then went to 3AK but once 3AK axed its all presenters to adopt an Italian format, Mansfield ended up back at AW co-hosting Remember When and Nightline with Philip Brady.
He was also a volunteer presenter in the early days at the community station that is now Inner FM in Heidelberg.

17 November 1994, 4pm: Derryn Hinch is summoned to the office of Nine’s chief executive David Leckie to be told the plug had been pulled on The Midday Show. Hinch had been at the helm of the show for only one year following the departure of Ray Martin to A Current Affair. Although the show had continued to dominate the timeslot across the nation, it was felt changing times and declining ratings necessitated a change in the afternoon line-up. An offer from Hinch to step away from the role to allow someone else to lift the show was rejected.
A new, one hour talk show presented by David Reyne and Tracy Grimshaw would appear on Nine six months later using the Midday title. Geoff Harvey’s orchestra was gone as were many of the variety elements viewers loved about the old show. The low budget, pared back show was rejected by the audience and it would be reformatted months later to more resemble the old Midday.
Kerri-Anne Kennerley would host a new incarnation of the show in 1996 with Geoff Harvey and a smaller band returning.
Did Hinch move to Sydney in 1994?
I seem to recall TVTV reported at the end of 1993 that Hinch and Kerri-Anne were both shortlisted for the Midday job, but Nine eventually favoured Hinch. Two years later they went with Kerri-Anne. They probably should have picked her first
I remember it being a massive shock that Hinch was appointed over KAK because he’d been axed by Ten the previous year and wasn’t known for doing that type of television.
November 19, 1999 - John Carpenter becomes the first person worldwide to win the top prize on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.
November 19, 2003 - Guy Sebastian wins the first season of Australian Idol. He is arguably the show’s most successful alumni.
Shannon Noll was robbed
People are still complaining about this some 16 years later?
At least both Guy Sebastian and Shannon Noll went onto have successful careers in the Australian music industry, unlike most recent talent show contestants.
