50 year anniversary today Ceefax was the world’s first teletext service, going live on 23 September 1974.
A rare simulcast on two of the biggest commercial network. Nine was bidding for the 2000 broadcast rights before 7 won them and televised every Olympics from 1996-2008.
Imagine if Nine did televise the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the network’s ratings would’ve smashed the roof.
IIRC, that was the only year Seven would win the ratings between 1978 and 2006.
They still smashed the roof regardless of whoever broadcasted it - Seven or Nine.
7 had a successful 2000 but from 2002-2006 they did not air the AFL but had the Olympic rights, Melbourne Cup and Australian Open then.
They also had the 2002 Commonwealth Games and the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
But overall the lack of other major sporting events and that of international dramas were factors in them lagging behind Nine during this period.
and Seven did a woeful job covering the 2003 Rugby World Cup: matches not shown live in Victoria/SA/WA while they were live in other states. Fox Sports also telecast it but had exclusive rights to some of the tournament, they did a bad job too, not televising Seven’s live match in Victoria/SA/WA but replaying it later up against the replay of same match on Seven, one Fox exclusive match I saw the commentary was so bad that if it wasn’t for the Fox Sports bug I would have thought I was watching Channel C31!
29 September 2001: Seven aired their last AFL match until 2007 with the 2001 AFL Grand Final bringing the end of an era after 45 years. Their next AFL Grand Final they would televise would be the 2008 AFL Grand Final

1 October 2000
Seven televises the closing ceremony of the Sydney 2000 games, bringing an end to the “Best ever” games.
This was the first NRL Grand Final not to feature a NSW club, something that would be repeated again in 2015 and 2017.
Melbourne’s audience for the 2006 NRL Grand Final was higher than Sydney’s was for the AFL Grand Final the previous day (this occurred again in 2016; and in both cases the Sydney Swans were represented in the AFL decider), but it’s worth noting the league decider was played in prime time.
