On This Day

Were there any studio facilities in Bendigo…? Or just a direct relay?

it would have been just a direct relay with regional news inserted (from Melbourne), AFAIK the only regional TV studio facilities ABC operated were at Rockhampton and Townsville

28 April 2001: Big Brother Australia debuted on New Zealand screens via TV2 (now TVNZ 2), although it was only a few days after it premiered on Australia’s Network Ten. By mistake, the NZ Listener described Big Brother as a British programme!

Maybe TV Week could do their TV listings like that?

They did when there were only five free to air channels. They squeeze in more per page now that there are more than 20.

I like how TVT-6 kept the name TasTV.

Following from the previous post, newspaper ads of Southern Cross from The Mercury in Hobart. The Examiner in Launceston ran the same full page ads, though strategically removed the “Now” from the beginning of each of the headlines as Southern Cross was the incumbent.

The Mercury’s centre page ad for Tas TV

The Mercury didn’t appear to have any news editorial at all about aggregation on the day, although its back page reported on a dispute between ABC and the Tasmanian Football League after the TFL denied ABC permission to broadcast live the Saturday afternoon game which ABC was hoping to run against Southern Cross’ live AFL coverage.

And the Tas TV advertising centrespread in the Examiner included this handy “catch up” for fans of Days Of Our Lives that had been missing the show up north since Southern Cross dumped it some months earlier

1 May 2012: WIN Gold is launched across regional Australia on the WIN Network and on WIN’s Nine branded metro broadcasters NWS and STW.

The channel continues to air in regional Australia offering a mix of old WIN produced programming such as Fishing Australia, complete with obsolete prices, competitions and offers, and infotainment programming spruiking steam mops, air fryers and home exercise equipment.

WIN continues to use the channel to sell Crawfords Classic DVD box sets long after many Australians deposited their DVD players at their local e-waste recycling depot and adopted streaming services to satisfy their entertainment needs.

My only gripe is that the watermark isn’t big enough.

Streaming services can’t always replace physical media such as DVDs. Especially when titles can come and go from streaming services as they wish. I still have a DVD player and would like to purchase more of the Crawfords DVDs but they are just too expensive.

I’m surprised that given the decent catalogue that Crawfords have that they wouldnt consider their own streaming service

Most streaming services survive by having new content added every month to keep subscribers. Crawfords isnt producing anything these days, is it?

Not since The Saddle Club ended in 2009.

Perhaps a reboot could be the flagship title?

They rediscovered a lot of the props and riding gear from The Saddle Club when WIN was clearing out the Ballarat property and preparing it for sale. It was donated to Riding for the Disabled. Don’t think they have any plans for a reboot.

There were two iterations of The Saddle Club wasn’t there? There was a version that aired on the ABC in the early-00s which is the one I remember watching and then about a decade later there was a version that aired on 9 as its then-current live-action kids show.

3 May 1957: HSV7 launches its new variety show, The Late Show, hosted by Noel Ferrier. The debut was on a Friday night, supposedly an attempt to get ahead of Nine’s In Melbourne Tonight which was to debut the following Monday.

Noel Ferrier resigned from the show a few months later and was replaced by 19-year-old Bert Newton. Both would eventually end up as part of the IMT line-up.

6 May 2007: While Jessica Rowe is on maternity leave from Today, Nine issues a brief statement regarding her status with the network. It says Rowe “would not be returning to the Network and that Nine and Jessica had reached an agreement that would allow Jessica to take up other opportunities for her career.”

It follows months of controversy surrounding comments allegedly made by CEO Eddie McGuire to senior executives about wanting to bone (fire) Jessica Rowe.
