On This Day

It’s interesting that these days television series and movies just change the facts in history to make the story more interesting.

Two factoids about the State Theatre hosting the '86 Logies:

  1. It would be the last time the ceremony was held outside of Melbourne until 2018
  2. Rhonda Burchmore, during an appearance on Studio 10 in 2017, complained about the catering that night, claiming that all she was given to eat was “a bag of Maltesers and a bottle of water”

That particular year did mark a departure from the usual dinner table setting for attendees, adopting instead to go with the theatre seating concept as is the norm for things like the Oscars.

21/4/2004 Seven produces a live episode of Blue Heelers, titled Reasonable Doubt. Although this particular episode rated well nationwide, the season overall struggled in the ratings as did most of the network that year.

There would be a couple more years of Logies where theatre seating was used.

Why didn’t some guests like this concept? It is also used at the Primetime Emmy Awards in the US.

I don’t think that’s right - the bombing episode happened this year and produced a big boost to ratings; the decline didn’t happen until mid-2005.

Correct, although there were a few notable new shows that launched after the 2004 Olympics. DWTS and Border Security were surprise hits for the network, along with Sunrise and 7 News Sydney which for the first time overtaking Nine.

Didn’t Nine’s Sydney 6pm bulletin claw back some lost ground against Seven during the later part of 2004?

Of course losing weeks probably still would’ve been seen as “unacceptable” for a news service which won all (or at least most) weeks in 2003 hence Nine hit the panic button and replaced Jim Waley with Mark Ferguson.

22 April 1969: The 200th episode of Homicide is broadcast on HSV7. The series would go on to clock up 510 episodes.

22 April 1983: The 25th Anniversary TV Week Logie Awards are held at the Regent Hotel, Melbourne. Hosted by Mike Willesee and telecast on Network Ten (and TVW7 in Perth). The awards celebrated 25 years with some nostalgic clips of past shows and reuniting some past faces on stage, such as Dave & Grace Sullivan (Paul Cronin and Lorraine Bayly) from The Sullivans, and Dorrie & Herb Evans (Pat McDonald and Ron Shand) from Number 96.

Daryl Somers won the Gold Logie, and the telecast went well past its 11.00pm end time, going until after midnight.
