Of all people to call Australia’s Steven Bradbury back at Salt Lake ‘02 and be arguably the most iconic winter games moment for us… It was Basil Zempilas for Seven.
Who would’ve been very much unknown outside of Perth at the time. Think he also did something at Sydney 2000, just about everybody at the network got some gig up until about Beijing 2008 (Better Homes & Gardens’ architect Pete Colquhoun possibly the strangest LOL).
Remembering it wouldn’t be until all the way in 2012 when his network profile increased, thanks to joining their AFL, initially on Saturday arvos (and an infamous Brett Kirk meme) and ‘footy central’ crosses during Saturday nights, then Australian Open tennis main women’s caller, Rio Olympics swimming caller, Weekend Sunrise co-host and Commonwealth Games swimming all followed and became one of Seven Sport’s biggest talents.
Only to step-down from most and eventually fizzle right out, moving into state politics and has essentially become nationally irrelevant again.

Speaking of 1992, the closing credits for Channel 7’s coverage have come up, for those clueless at some of the names listed as commentators
- Val Beddoe was a 2 time olympic Diver
- Jeff “Hitman” Harding was the WBC Light Heavyweight Champion at the time having retained the title in June in Marseille
- it was definitely the last Olympics for Ron Casey (who did Boxing with Harding), Graham McNaney (who I assume did Basketball alongside Lindsay Gaze), Cameron Williams (not sure what sport he would have covered) and Peter Meares (who actually called the Football semi final at least alongside Craig Johnston)
- Peter Mitchell was listed as a commentator as well as a host, not exactly sure which sport he would have covered
