Olympics Coverage - History

Next year for the 25th anniversary of Sydney 2000, 7 won’t be able to produce a documentary as they do not have the Olympic rights nor be able to upload content on 7plus around September 15-October 1 2025.

They wouldn’t have been able to if they had the current rights - when they made the 20th anniversary documentary, they still had to pay to licence the pictures from the IOC

Do they have a ban during that time?

Yes, and no - they can’t upload any Sydney 2000 content without licencing it through the IOC. This applies whenever any broadcaster (including Nine) want to use past Olympic content for non-news purposes. So they do have a condition, but it applies all the time.

So BigVic’s statement that they “can’t upload content to 7plus” is odd.

Even if they were rights holders it might be tricky as usually the access to the archive which comes with the rights is limited to the calendar year of the games, hence why 9 coverage and others such as the BBC expires on the 31st Decemeber.

That said I’m not sure what the period is for the Winter Olympics and whether having rights to the Winter games opens up the summer archive too, as if the window is Sept-Aug then the anniversary period would be captured in that, but I suspect with the Aussie rights having changed hands and 7 retaining copyright on their broadcast elements it’s unlikely Nine would do anything - as even if they could show the footage itself having to use alternative commentary pretty much rubs out the nostalgia of any trip down memorary lane.

It’s perhaps more likely they’d focus on specific elements - maybe a documentary on Cathy Freeman or a look at the legacy of the games, focusing more on what happened afterwards.

Big throwback to the Games on Foxtel, courtesy of @WestKnight’s link in the ABC News History thread:

And this is Comm Games Dehli but still close enough:

During the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, did 10 really broke into programming briefly during an Australian Gold Medal event with Rove on screen then a music video until the event was finished? If that was the case, I wonder if Nine also had Ray Martin doing the same?

Geez where has that time gone?

Yep. It was called ‘The Gap’.

Yes they did, it was called ‘The Gap’ or something like that. Little bit of comedy from Rove and a music video. It was usually just come on during an ad break and last til the event was over. Rove would say things like ‘maybe you wanna have a very quick flick to catch something important’.

No idea if 9 was doing the same (I was 12 in 2000 so can’t remember that much), but doubt it.

Foxtel in London 2012 - promo and studio including Shirvo, Rove, Alex Cullen and Eddy.

Nice find. A young James Bracey, now star at Nine wwos. And Eddie McGuire when he hasn’t allowed to cover sport on Nine (still a Nine face though with then top-rating Hot Seat), due to a Fox Sports deal (the then new revolutionary 2012 AFL deal including Fox Footy channel return and London 2012).

2012 was unique in that Nine also had a HDTV 3D simulcast during the London Olympics.
And never to be repeated.

Funny how Avatar created the 3D fad which then disappeared rather quickly…

I recall that Nine would broadcast world feed highlights of each day on the 3D channel

I still remember when London 2012 was coming up I wanted a 3d tv so bad then realised I could get it via Foxtel on Xbox but I was too late with both. :joy:

Well, I am happy to eat humble pie; The Gap was a real thing at least on Ten (via Ten Capital):

Graphic is a man swimming from 19/9/2000.
The recording does not have the gap itself.

Mind you, during those 16 days, 10 also dubbed itself as “Your official entertainment network” and also ran a “New Australian Shows” Promo which also featured Rove.

Not sure if this is the correct thread for it, but I found footage from Seven News Brisbane recapping the day following the conclusion of the Sydney Olympics (Monday, October 2, 2000):
