NRL on Nine

Best case scenario, if Storm win and play in a home preliminary final, then it could be either a Friday or Saturday. VIC viewers will get game on 9HD. I would guess that they will include the Post-match coverage. This will happen.

It will be on the Friday so as to avoid a clash with the AFL Grand Final, which is the following day (September 28).

2014 is the first year in which both NRL and AFL Grand Finals are not on the same weekend.

Next year, the NRL preliminary finals will clash with AFL GF, and in 2021. Not sure of which Date will host AFL GF (24 September or 1 October) in 2022.

Especially if the game goes beyond Golden Point like it did between the Roosters and Tigers a number of years ago, as unlikely as that is (there has to be a winner of course, and I think they just swap ends again if it’s still tied at 90 and keep playing until a result). Every chance that this game could go beyond 80 too.

Canberra will do well, but I think Storm should win it in regulation time.

NRL Finals

After 25 rounds of rugby league action, 2019 Finals Footy has arrived on Nine.

Nine is the home of the finals, and the only place to watch EVERY game LIVE and in HD . Three special viewing streams are also available on 9Now for each finals encounter, including player cam, coach cam and match statistics, among others.

Starting tonight at the new time of 7.00pm AEST, the first Qualifying Final between the Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs writes another chapter in the oldest rivalry in rugby league at the Sydney Cricket Ground, one of the birthplaces of the great game.

The Roosters, defending premiers, go in as favourites, boasting a near full-strength side with the return of five-eighth Luke Keary, Siosiua Taukeiaho, Brett Morris and Mitch Aubusson. The Rabbitohs will be full of confidence however, after beating the Tricolours twice this year, despite the loss of inspirational captain Sam Burgess and representative winger Dane Gagai. But the bruising Burgess twins Tom and George are back.

With an express ticket to the Preliminary Finals on the line, expect neither side to give an inch in this ultimate grudge match.

Saturday night sees a double-header of epic proportions, kicking off with the second Qualifying Final between the minor premiers, the Melbourne Storm, and the much-improved Canberra Raiders.

While a trip down to AAMI Park is usually one that most teams dread, Canberra take heart after defeating Melbourne on their hostile ground recently against all the odds. The Green Machine welcome back Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Iosia Soliola, John Bateman and Jordan Rapana, all of whom were rested last week, along with Joseph Tapine from injury.

Storm skipper Cameron Smith lives for these games, and alongside the returning Cameron Munster and Josh Addo-Carr he will have the Storm fired up for revenge on the Raiders, who inflicted one of their only four losses this year. The victor here also advances to the Preliminary Finals.

Straight after this on Saturday Night Finals Footy , the first Elimination Final at Lottoland pits the injury-gutted Manly Sea Eagles against the fired-up Cronulla Sharks, fresh off an emphatic win over the Tigers which sealed a finals spot for them.

In what might be Cronulla legend Paul Gallen’s final game, the Sharks will smell blood in the water with Manly in survival mode after losing stars Tom Trbojevic, Martin Taupau and Curtis Sironen, among others.

Sharks five-eighth Shaun Johnson has been back in top form lately, and crucially kicking goals. Every point could count against a Manly side always tough to beat at home, and with Daly Cherry-Evans, Jake Trbojevic and Reuben Garrick still in the side, anything is possible.

On Sunday, the Brisbane Broncos travel south to face the Parramatta Eels in the second Elimination Final . The Broncos need to turn around their poor record on the road to remain in the running for the premiership.

Tough Queensland Origin forward Joe Ofahengaue will bolster Brisbane’s impressive forward pack alongside young stars Payne Haas and David Fifita.

The Eels have proven to be a force at their new home, Bankwest Stadium, with halfback Mitchell Moses leading the competition in try assists this year and captain Clinton Gutherson a constant threat at fullback.

Saturday afternoon also sees the return of the Holden NRL Women’s Premiership, with all games broadcast LIVE on Nine and 9Gem. The Brisbane Broncos NRLW squad won the inaugural title last year and will be looking to go back-to-back.

The Sydney Roosters, New Zealand Warriors and St George Illawarra Dragons sides will have something to say about that however, with countless stars ready to showcase their skills.

If the Women’s State of Origin match this year was any indication, the 2019 NRLW competition will be must-see TV.

thats brilliant. People talk about the league vs afl rivalry but here in Melbourne both the Storm and the AFL work together and appreciate each others codes.

Given the Saturday AFL game is a twilight fixture, I imagine the Storm will again be on the main channel in Melbourne.

What a huge win to Parramatta - by smashing Brisbane 58-0; the biggest margin in a Finals game ever.

And you’d think the Melbourne game would be on Nine rather than on Gem.

Semi-Finals

FOUR TEAMS FACING EITHER GLORY OR ELIMINATION

The first week of Nine’s Finals Footy delivered drama and excitement, as well as a bit of everything from shock upsets to emphatic victories, and more is in store for week two.

With Nine being the only place to watch EVERY game LIVE and in HD , the stage is set for two huge elimination Semi-Finals this week, with the victors going on to face the Roosters and Raiders next week in the Preliminary Finals.

Tonight on Friday Night Footy, it’s the 1st Semi-Final between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Manly Sea Eagles at ANZ Stadium.

After a heavy loss to the Roosters last week, the defiant Rabbitohs will be overjoyed to welcome back Sam Burgess, the leader of the pack, and Queensland Origin star Dane Gagai, giving them their strongest side in months. Should they lose, it will be the final game for the club’s most-capped player, John Sutton.

The Sea Eagles regain their version of Sam Burgess in the form of Marty Taupau, after suspension. They sunk the Sharks last week in a major upset and continue to threaten, thanks to coach Des Hasler who has been hailed for getting a team unfancied before the season started deep into the 2019 finals.

Making this match-up even more enticing is the fact that both sides have won a game apiece this season against the other, by a solitary point, meaning this one could again go down to the wire.

On Saturday Night Footy, the mouth-watering 2nd Semi-Final pits the Melbourne Storm against the Parramatta Eels. While the minor premiers were pipped at the post by the Raiders last week, it was the Eels who had everyone talking after dismantling the Broncos in a record 58-0 demolition at Bankwest Stadium.

While the Eels have all the momentum, the Storm will back themselves to get the job done at home, AAMI Park. Both teams are virtually unchanged, although Eels prop Kane Evans sees a welcome return. Mitchell Moses, brilliant in attack, and Fijian wing sensation Maika Sivo, the leading try-scorer in 2019, shape as keys to a Parramatta win.

Melbourne will look to their dangerous scheming duo, Cameron Smith and Cameron Munster, to steer them home and stay alive in the race for the premiership. The prize for the winner is a Preliminary Final against the title-holders, the Roosters.

Round two of the NRLW season continues on Nine and 9Gem this weekend, with the Broncos taking on the Roosters on Saturday ahead of the 2nd Semi-Final, followed by Warriors versus Dragons on Sunday afternoon.

I remember that final too- because Rabs said it was the longest final up till that point. They threw straight to the other final almost as soon as the Roosters won- at first Rabs said a kick was to come, but corrected himself. ABC radio also crossed to the other match straight away too.

I’m assuming that they cross to the other semi straight away so that the kick-off wont be delayed too much.

NRL confirmed on main channel for Melbourne on Saturday.
