NRL on Nine

I saw on the NRL’s official media release/web page, regarding the NRL Grand Final records, that they are claiming it was the “most watched Grand Final in Australian sports history”.

The way it’s worded sounds like of all sports, including AFL, so it must’ve pipped the 2005 AFL Grand Final to make it the highest-rating AFL or NRL (excluding Origin) game since OzTAM started in 2001?

Big Footy (a page archived from the morning after the game 20 years ago by the looks of it) has the 2005 AFL GF preliminary 5 city metro + regional affiliates as 4.449m (just 11,000 viewers off Sunday’s record NRL GF’s 4.460m).

However the different metrics (TAM broadcast only vs VOZ) and preliminary vs time adjusting/confirmed data should be noted and given the tiny difference it could well change.

But it looks like the NRL’s article, no doubt supplied by Nine Research, is correct.

They can now even gloat that the 2025 NRL GF has topped the most-watched-ever AFL GF by a wider-than-expected mile.

is the newly revised number.

Nine apologising for the picture quality. The vision was frozen for a couple of seconds during the bunker decision.

There were similar issues with the last series from Fiji too, I remember. I think general comms in the Pacific are a bit average.

I think this time it was just in relation to the “bunker” vision that was stuttering and eventually frozen. Otherwise the quality is ok.

Though general picture quality isn’t as sharp as we get with local OB systems / playout facilities.

Hopefully this can be improved by the time the Chiefs join in 2028.

Would have to be, there’s always problems for these games.

So that the main channel can carry a critical block of programming.

Repeat after repeat after repeat.

Like… I mean, really? At least network the first game of each day all across.

Second game? Bounce it when the news comes on. (Unless you’re in Sydney, in which case the game would be over by then.)

Picture quality seems better than last weekend when Nine had to apologise to viewers..

Seems I jumped the gun on that desk being binned. Why they continue to persist with it is beyond me. It was past its use-by date before they moved out of Willoughby.

To be honest, I don’t think it looks any better than last week, PQ still looks a bit soft and have seen a bit of jitter/stuttering as well.

Why are Nine showing these neutral games?

Probably part of the broadcast deal… sports content is generally cheap to make/produce and gets the gambling ad $$$$.
