The WTA Phillip Island Trophy began at Melbourne Park outside courts on the weekend but Nine is not showing the matches, not even on 9Now.

It’s a match practice tournament for those knocked out of the Australian Open, so I’m not overly surprised.

There are highlights on YouTube and the WTA website of various matches. So it is being covered. Just not being shown here, as you say.

In fact, I’m picking they don’t fall under the Australian Open series of tournaments.

Spark Sport NZ (who has WTA rights) has live coverage of the tournament on Wednesday, whereas Sky has the Australian Open rights and like Nine, has no coverage scheduled.

I don’t see anything in the beIN Sports guide. They supposedly have WTA rights in Australia. If they are excluded because the tournament is in Australia, then Nine should have the rights, and should be showing it.

BEIN don’t get the rights to WTA tournaments in Australia. Surely, Nine would have to show them under their contract unless that was a condition of the discount they got before the tournament. Bit annoying.

Nine’s Tennis Coverage will end short tonight due to the withdrawal of M. Berrettini due to an injury. This match was scheduled to play at 8:15PM (straight after the Ash Barty match) but there will be no matches after.

So will this mean Nine’s coverage will have repeats or end the coverage of the tennis for tonight?

It could replay the women’s singles match between Mertens and Muchova (currently live on 9Gem), or a doubles match.

That’s a bummer for Nine. But that’s what can happen when you get to Week 2 and if it’s the only remaining match for that day.

It will depend how long the Barty match goes obviously, but as all other matches are underway and regardless if they go the distance, are unlikely to be available after Ash’s match.

They’ll probably heavily push “Guess Whom” and pad out a lot before it with Barty post match, analysis, etc. Then they might show one of the days best matches but probably only a set or final games, like Nadal or Alcott.

Hard to see tonight’s telecast going much past 9-10pm though.

Update:

James Bracey just said on-air Nine will be showing Nadal’s match later

I’m not a big one on the tennis front, but how does the 9 coverage compare to all the years of 7?

Pretty much where 7 left off. Both pretty solid. 7’s coverage got a lot better in the last few years

About the same. 9 kept a lot of the innovations and style that 7 used in the last few years and have built on that. I personally still find it weird that tennis is on 9 and cricket on 7 (for now) but hey.

Nine taking tonight till midnight it seems, now playing the Mertens upset loss match that was on 9Gem earlier tonight (telecast finished 8:24pm 24min overtime).

Credit to Nine, could’ve just wrapped around 9pm and chucked on a movie, but instead stuck with the telecast and went with match replays. Might have payed off. Will be rather interesting tomorrow!

Would be better if Nine didn’t use the ugly world graphics and was a bit more ‘present’ at Melbourne Park (this year’s obvs not normal
in that regard). It felt like seven was really in the thick of it with their raised hosting box.
