Nine Tennis Coverage

I think that was a joke

Disagree - there were a fair few on-court interviews during the AO which featured bizarre (and that’s putting it lightly) questions being asked of players.

No more than usual IMHO.
Remember the Ian Cohen blow up from a few years ago?

Interesting how it always seems to be the world feed/AO commentators/announcers, rather than Nine or Seven over the years.

Ian Cohen, John Fitzgerald, Roger Rasheed, James Sherry

Good to see some old footage of Burke’s Backyard, National Nine News and an old US Open opener from when Nine had the broadcasting rights to that tournament in the noughties, among other things on the Jelena Dokic documentary this evening.

With credit to Zampakid, here is the full opener from 2001, the year that Lleyton Hewitt won the men’s singles title:

On a side note, I think the sports ident that airs right at the beginning would air prior to any sporting broadcast back then.

Also during tonight’s Jelena Dokic special doco just saw Sandy Roberts and heard John Alexander from the Sydney 2000 Olympics and Seven’s original domestic broadcast tape.

Just before that Clare Brady from Seven News (later TT).

And just before that Mike Munro on ACA.

Don’t mean to spoil but later on we may/will see footage from her remarkable run to the quarter-finals of the 2009 Australian Open (personally, I still remember that dramatic match she played against Alisa Kleybanova the day before Australia Day - it’s right up there among some of the great Australian moments at the AO this century, along the likes of Ash Barty winning the women’s title in 2022 and Lleyton Hewitt reaching the men’s final in 2005). EDIT: the original Seven footage is shown.

Ann Sanders on Seven’s Morning News circa 2009/2010 also shown.

Maybe the production company did go to Seven for a lot of this vision and they complied for the sake of the film making in the doco or some broadcaster that had all their recordings.

They sourced Seven’s tapes. Not sure how.

Heard Tracy Austin and Sandy Roberts in all her 2009 Aus Open calls that the Nine doco aired.

Interesting some had the 7Sport watermark, others didn’t, despite both being Seven’s (you can tell by the deep black-yellow-red-white scoreboard bug which was different to their world feed one). So I’d say they went to Tennis Australia for the footage.

Nine never use Seven’s, always the world feed (since it came about around 2000 IIRC), disappointingly, but very convenient for them. I think I’ve only ever seen it once, when a few years ago they showed Alicia Molik’s 2005 AO run.

RE: Danika Mason.

Probably too early, but with the announcement of new Today Show sport presenter, I’d guess she’ll have to scale back some roles, especially as she’s already committed to continuing some NRL duties.

She usually does back half of the afternoon and prime time at the Aus Open, so theoretically she could still do her tennis duties, but would be a bit of an ask and very long days for over two weeks straight, given some matches go very late and she’d be waking up for Today potentially only a courtly or hours later if that’s the case.

They could switch her and Clint Stanaway, that’d mean she’d continue straight after Today and then get to knock off mid-arvo.

Otherwise, assuming somebody replaces her, most likely from TCN Sydney, who would be the contenders? Who are the most senior or top all-rounder sports journos there or who either know/like tennis or are at least as good as Danika in front of the camera including frequently on the move and ad lobbing live?

From memory she does some other summer of tennis tournaments, which would also be in question. However don’t believe she covers the other Grand Slams for Nine?

And on a separate note, her missing out on covering Nine’s Paris Olympics would no doubt still be a disappointment, even if mutually agreed and because they needed somebody to still lead NRL. So the announcement today is also rather rewarding for her.

No, she only covers the Australian Open.

Todd Woodbridge and Jelena Dokic cover the other three Majors, while Tony Jones is on the ground for Wimbledon (Ken Sutcliffe formerly had that role) along with Woodbridge. I also believe Brenton Speed calls the matches at the other three Majors, this meaning he would take a few weeks off calling NRL matches.

I wonder if Todd calls all the “big” matches much like how Chris Fowler does it here in the States on ESPN?
