Nine Tennis Coverage

Well the C Suite will certainly be tied up on a virtual meeting tomorrow morning. I thought it was just going to blow over going into a new week, clearly not.

9 need to sort this out tomorrow and it hope it somewhat be forgotten about mid week.

They will need to pull back TJs role for the coming week and he will need to be kept well away from the finale. They can pull him back a bit without too much notice, the majority of viewers wouldn’t have any idea what his roster was anyway.

I think it would have been better for Novak to take the microphone and express his opinion on the TJ comments then and there. That way his disappointment would have gone out to the world and the Nine audience live. That would have been a bigger embarrassment for the network.

Absolutely and I think 9 need to understand they might have still dodged a bullet here, but they still need to quickly address this tomorrow which will still come with embarrassment.

Not sure if the next court interview would somewhat sidestep the whole thing if he gets an apology. Still some issues still to come for 9 as they attempt to exit this issue.

I think get it sorted tomorrow and mid to late week it’s sort of forgotten, TJ needs to be moved to non peak viewing however.

It was inexcusable that before going off air tonight, the Nine broadcast didn’t address Novak’s comments.

Yet they found time to squeeze in not one, not two but four ad-breaks in the half hour between the end of the doubles match and going off air…

I’d say Management would need to sign off on that and come to a decision, the timing was likely too tight and also too late in the night. I doubt Novak’s team would be interested in fielding any calls from TA or Nine tonight. Tomorrow likely a different story.

I’d expect this to be addressed by lunchtime tomorrow after considerable meetings in the AM.

Wow people are so soft. There was nothing offensive or aggressive about what TJ said. It was a joke!

He was just saying what a lot of Australians think about Novak especially given how he tried to flout the laws a few years when he got deported… I can’t stand the bloke and I know I am not the only one!

I do agree but it’s probably more the tension between Nine and TA here that will force an apology. They won’t want the global attention from this. It will bug them all week.

It was an opinion of TJ not 9 which is why they will distance themselves and force an apology.

It will be interesting how much they throw him under the bus though.

100% i doubt 9 showed the press conference and while 7,10, ABC & even SBS will be showing it and highlighting the incident, 9 probably will not, apart from an apology. doing it on court would of been a bigger statement. I guess he wanted to talk with Craig about it first and address it using the press conference and his socials instead of on court

One thing I don’t get is why tomorrow will be 3 days since the TJ comments yet Novak only decided to do something about it 2 hours ago.

Also why Nine let alone TJ didn’t already apologise to his camp on Friday night as soon as the video leaked.

Or why TJ even said what he said (the truth not that BS he’s peddling) in the first place. This whole thing is just so bizarre, very weird.

Sydney Morning Herald with comprehensive coverage of their own company’s employee’s self-inflicted nightmare, complete with snap reader poll and “Nine has been contacted for comment, Tony Jones has been contacted for comment, Tennis Australia has been contacted for comment”

What I meant was they should have shown the remarks Novak made at the start of his press conference so that Nine viewers know why he didn’t do the on-court interview.

Ignoring the elephant in the room is a really bad look.

Maybe he should the dance in front of the Serbian fans and anything else they ask of him as an apology

Novak strikes me as someone who doesn’t respond to these sorts of things immediately- rather he ruminates and stews on it for a while before deciding to respond and hit back.

Same with his claims regarding his 2022 immigration detention affair- he didn’t make those allegations straight away but you can clearly see that 3 years on he’s still quite bothered and upset by what happened and clearly hasn’t moved past it.

I agree with Pranks in that it probably was too late notice, better to have a proper genuine apology prepared and with all parties having spoken to each other first, including executives at TA/AO, Nine and Jones & Djokovic’s agents and legal, all likely to occur first thing after dawn.

Bracey I’m sure could’ve, even ad-libbed, his own professional thoughts and apology, but no doubt him and the crew decided against that as the developments were still raw and didn’t want to go against authority from higher up at Nine.

Going to be a fascinating media day today, it unfortunately overshadows the actual tennis and de Minaur’s big day :frowning:

9 needs to sack that Tony Jones and be done with him. He’s terrible at his job and causes too much trouble. Hes a fool. There are so many better sports broadcasters at nine.

This whole charade has literally exploded online. Even Elon Musk and Piers Morgan are having their two cents!

If Nine were smart they’d move the Australian Open to 9Life and have a prime time exclusive sit-down with Tony Jones tonight  :joy:

Sunrise and Today. Comment on Today that Karl was the only one on “team Novak”.
