I’m guessing they’re taking a transmission/dirty feed of Channel 9 Melbourne, so all of Nine’s promos and commercial clients are seen by the public? Or would Fed Square/AO not allow this and be a raw/clean feed of Nine, but when going to ad breaks they just see more court vision between change of ends (like Stan Sport world feeds) and longer breaks a blank screen or opt out FS advertising?
How weak is that night session for second week.
Alcarez is good though, someone you’d usually expect in day time (suited to the sun/heat of the day like his mate Rafa), they usually give the higher seeds prime slots don’t they, which looks like what’s happened here, even if yes might be straight sets and some of the day names would’ve been better if at night

Nine’s order of play today, a rare upload to X and oddly (not sure how they did that) using the old graphics package (looks like if Medvedev wraps earlier they’re moving Zverev v Norrie to main channel): @TV.Cynic

Alcaraz is fine. But he’s playing a nobody. This is week two and you’ve got a Zverev v Norrie match right there.
I do wonder if some of the (albeit minor) pushback on Zverev played a role here.
And maybe also because no doubt Nine worked hard to get Alex into last night and it paid off in droves (including an unexpected 50% share), except for the fact he lost, but kind of like they already got a golden wish and that share as well almost covers them for a couple of nights.
Also, forgot to add in my previous comment, I realise that AO takes into consideration other broadcasters and countries time zones, not just Nine/Australia, so may have also played a part in today.
Kecmanovic is an alright player. He’s no. 60 in the world and has defeated 14th seed Paul and 24th seed Struff so I wouldn’t say he’s a nobody but a tough challenge for him.
Comparatively a nobody then. I think he’s a decent player, just seems like odd scheduling.
You’ve got two seeds at 4pm, just seems a weird one.
The women’s match after feels definitely scheduled for the Chinese market.
Yeah and I guess when you’ve got the world’s largest country watching (even a small number there is gigantic to us), plus a separate broadcast deal with their WOWOW Tennis.
I noticed 2014 champ and somewhat cult figure Li Na was doing the publicity rounds at Melb Park yesterday, including with top Chinese players.

9Gem morning host position
Matthew Pavlich (who was Gem afternoons last week) has now replaced Emma Lawrence (who was Gem mornings), due to minimal prime time matches and therefore Gem in week 2 - channel ends coverage tonight*), Em has now become a roving reporter for week 2.
And I still reckon Nine are grooming Pavlich for something else, maybe Paris 2024.
*except 6pm, where main channel now moves (9Go! won’t be part of the coverage anymore).
A rare early night for Australian Open organisers with the last match of the day finishing at around 10.30pm AEDT (Qinwen Zheng defeated Oceane Dodin 6-0 6-3 to book the last spot in women’s singles quarter finals).
It’s going to be interesting to see what Nine plans to show between now and midnight AEDT.
It’s actually the Japanese broadcaster of AO.
Live tennis finished not that long ago (10.30pm aedt). Understandably, Nine are now replaying some of the afternoon matches, so viewers don’t switch over to whatever the other networks are airing…
They have “the Morning Serve” for an hour in the mornings. Why not a “Sixth Set” post match show where they can still show highlights, but also banter between James Bracey, Jim Courier and former players still in the precinct? For when matches finish early?
Nine could be in a little bit of trouble for tonight’s feature matches starting on time, with finals (QFs) now all on centre court and not starting until 1pm, if both day time matches go the distance or even 4 sets or long 3 / 2 setters, the scheduled 7:15pm aedt start for Sabalenka v Krejikova might not happen, then there’s the match of the day in Sinner v Rublev (scheduled for 8:15pm which is wishful thinking as they have to wait for the ladies to finish) and that could go a very long time and if not until say 9pm or 10pm, could stretch into the early hours…
However, for Nine, they’d probably be happy, it would mean high late night audiences and shares (especially non-aedt markets) and possibly some thrilling Joker v Fritz spilling into prime time, while still promoting the two upcoming matches.
Although, all of this might not happen, if the two day time matches are very one sided and quick. The two Americans are scheduled then, for USA prime time.
Slightly off-topic, but I’ve noticed that 7Bravo will be airing Wimbledon (the movie) at 8:30pm this Sunday night - therefore pitting it against the AO men’s final on Nine.
They did this last year too
Lets go Fritzy, lets go!!
The first women’s quarter-final between Gauff and Kostyuk is going into the third set. At this rate, I expect Djokovic v Fritz won’t start until 4.30pm AEDT at least.
Yeah but how often does that happen?
Didn’t start until around 4.45pm. All night matches looks to be delayed by a few hours too.
Surely there is a risk that the second quarterfinal schedules (Rublev and Sinner) doesn’t make the 11pm cut off time? Not ideal at this point if the comp to delay for a day.
Could they move a match like that to MCA?
