Using Brisbane 2032 for example, you would think that the ABC will want its coverage to be heard locally via ABC 612 Brisbane. The broadcaster will allocate more resources to broadcast the Games and will be hoping to air special programs in the lead up to and during the event, on ABC 612. That plan won’t be possible if Nine insists that Brisbane viewers can only listen to its coverage via 4BC.
Too bad for the ABC? Nine purchased the rights. If they want it for themselves they should have offered a better bid.
The issue is that radio rights (commercial and non-commercial) was bundled with the TV rights for the Games of 2024 to 2032, so the ABC wouldn’t have been able to bid separately for radio rights only.
Again, oh well. Such is life.
Why are you so concerned that the ABC don’t have for rights in the capitals?
As is often said, the radio / media landscape as well as the technology will most likely look different come 2032. By then, streaming or something like it may be more prominent and popular. Who knows, even 5AA could be in Nine’s ownership and an online newspaper like WAToday and Brisbane Times be on offer!!
This is not particularly uncommon and even previously audio rights have been bundled by the IOC with negotiations held with the visual rights holder - saves them dealing with a million negotiations
This is why I’m fairly confident in previous agreements that Seven also owned the audio rights and then on sold them to SEN, Triple M and/or ABC for various different Olympics.
I definitely recall Triple M simulcasted Seven’s Rio 2016 coverage for some events and even ran a DAB station that carried Seven’s coverage.
ABC even used to do some of their broadcasting from BCM/HSV Melbourne as they had access to all the vision to commentate off screen easily at BCM.
Yep - 7 Rio Live on DAB+
Interesting internal radio data released. Looking very much like ‘Seven heaven’ (as Knoxy would put on TVT)… Has turned to ‘Nine heaven’ so far with these Olympic Games across the board. Executive must be stoked and vindicated. Meanwhile rivals and haters will get more jealous and angrier.
Maybe if the rivals didn’t want to be angry they should’ve stumped up more cash rather than being involved in dud deals ![]()
Wouldn’t be surprised if Seven (nor others like 10 and Foxtel) would’ve imagined it’d be rating and capturing the conversation as high, like Tokyo, as Paris has so far
Given Nine either don’t seem to care, or haven’t noticed that ABC Gold Coast is able to be recieved in Brisbane (on both analogue and Digital), I think if they did do this year’s arrangement in 2032, Brisbane will still get local coverage, and normal programs ![]()
ABC should definitely be involved in Brisbane 2032.
Why?
Why? Just because they are the public broadcaster? They may not be able to afford it…. It does cost money and they have to pay for the rights, they aren’t just given out for free.
Nick McCallum would fill in on 3AW Drive tomorrow (Tuesday), said Jacqui Felgate at the end of today’s show. She revealed on air that she would have a day procedure tomorrow.
The Ace regional stations seem to be taking the Olympics from 8pm through overnight where they would normally take 3AW. But not 2AY which is running music (although I’m not sure if that’s normal for them).
Incidentally 2CC are going out of their way to take Olympics outside their normal network programming. They dropped the 6am local shows over the weekend to stay with Olympics until the end of coverage at 7am.
I listened to some coverage tonight. It’s very 2GB-heavy with Mark Levy hosting from the studio with Bill Woods who called the Opals game. Earlier Ray Hadley and Libby Trickett in Paris called the swimming.
Good to hear the commentators actually calling the sports. In the past (ABC?) would just do constant updates with hardly any commentating.
Bill Woods on again calling the Nadal v Djokovic match.
Seems to have changed tonight, all seem to be running music (from a sample of 3WM, 3CS, 3NE and 2AY which I’ve been able to pick up).
2AY usually has a very talk heavy schedule so it’s a bit unusual for them to run music at night.
Interesting. 2QN was taking Olympics when I checked earlier tonight but has switched over to music since then…
Yet to see single good reason why it is expected that ABC must hold broadcast radio rights in locations where Nine has a station.
They’re the public broadcaster. So….?
