This morning I heard Denis O’Kane read the news on Ross and Russel’s breakfast program. I rarely get the chance to tune into breakfast, is David Armstrong the normal newsreader on the breakfast program?
He does the news from around 5.30 A.M up to Midday.
Yes and has done so for years, I lived in Ballarat about 10 years ago and he was doing 3AW news on 3BA back then
3AW reporting they are off air on DAB this morning.
Source Twitter.
The same problem is affecting Magic 1278 as well
That’s a big problem for an AM station like 3AW to be off air from digital in their prime time.
Was off yesterday too.
Do many people have digital radio?
These days I’d imagine a lot more streaming via devices and via the website. That’s how I listen.
3AW said its digital radio transmission was off air due to power problem at the Telstra exchange at Mount Dandenong yesterday, caused by the wild weather. Telstra said the power issue also affected phone and internet service in the area, with one engineer describing the problem as a “moving beast”.
Would have to see the survey numbers for it, if it is surveyed?
It’s the #1 station by a mile, certain to be a higher number listening via digital esp as the alternative is AM which is challenged by tram network, built environment, poor coverage/night time on channel interference.
Am yet to see any station release meaningful figures to add to the analogue survey with streaming audience numbers/share etc, it seems to be rolled in and a footnote recorded if the station did not operate streaming.
Surely these days, GfK’s metropolitan radio ratings surveys would take into consideration listening via DAB+ and online streaming in addition to traditional AM/FM?
i did another survey last week (like the one i did last year)
one good thing is that is is online now , instead of a paper diary. one thing like last year though is it asks how you are listening - am/fm, digital or streaming for each 15 min block you fill out
Still down even now, which is a very poor effort.
It’s likely linked to the severe weather that’s happened. A lot of Telstra services have also been impacted which as a flow on appears to have affected DAB. They said this on air the other day, it’s not their fault internally.
There are still people across the state who still don’t have power and are unlikely to have it restored until Wednesday.
Every other station is on air though, so something about Nine’s setup is not as robust as others. Given most DAB radios don’t do AM, it’s more important for the AM stations to stay on air on digital.
That said it’s back now.
DAB Radios should include AM for regional areas where there no DAB+ at the moment
Problem is that they’re designed for the European market, where there are very few AM stations left. Nearly all over the air listening is on FM and DAB. So there’s no pressing need to add the AM band. Australia is somewhat unique that way. There’s a large Sangean radio that does all three bands. But it’s not a great radio.
At the Brisbane Showgrounds - judging by the background, just as well it is just radio.
3AW Schedule for tomorrow given it’s the Queens Birthday Public Holiday.
5:30am-8:30am: Breakfast
8:30am-12:00pm: Mornings (although it’s unclear if Neil will present)
12:00pm-6:00pm: 3AW Football
6:00pm-7:00pm: Sportsday
7:00pm-8:00pm: Money News
8:00pm-12:00am: Nights
I’m not sure why they can’t just have the footy coverage start at 3pm, so then Afternoons can air as normal. I don’t think we need three hours of pre-match on a Monday, but I imagine one of the reasons is because they want to air the Big Freeze/celebrities going down the slide.
