My wish list is simply for a station playing good energising music with Live and Local Jocks announcing the music, the weather and the time. As far as breakfast radio goes I have recently found myself listening to Smooth which does this just fine (despite that I wish they would mix up their jingles and I hate the name Smooth). I tried listening to Marty Sheargold the other morning and found it unlistenable. Endless talk about nothing with everyone sounding like Huzi. Unfortunately 3MP is also unlistenable as it so dreary and dull with little energy.
It’ll be very interesting to see how Nine differentiates Magic from 3MP in Melbourne.
I’m hoping Magic stays more uptempo classic hits, whilst 3MP focuses on the easy classics/easy hits.
It would be great if they had some great community radio like shows, like the Congo line, Inphase , Powerzone, The Mechie Show etc. Perhaps no prog rock though . I don’t it would work on 2ue. Maybe triple m or Double J.
Prog Rock format could work.
Having said what I said, Id certainly listen if they did try
Except the co-chairman of News Corp also happens to own Nova Entertainment…
Yep. Still drawing a long bow there.
That may be true but Rupert is still effectively running the show at News Corp and Lachlan with Nova.
Last I checked they’re two different people. Anyway this is wayyyy off topic.
I’ve been listening a bit to Greatest Hits Radio (GHR) in the UK. I think this is a good template for 2UE and Magic Melbourne. I still think 4BH needs to go full on easy listening.
But for 2UE and Magic it would suit if they can match the polish of GHR. It’s fairly safe but a really good mix of music with lots of 60s and 70s and into the 80s. It sounds really professional too - something the Nine music stations really lack.
Yeah I listen to it the other day, the way they cut off the song into the news was poor. which has been reported on this forum.
Ace Radio has put out their first job ad for Nine Radio’s music stations, in which they’re looking for Account Managers for Direct Sales at 4BH.
There is no wasting time by Ace. Good they are on the front foot! Look forward to this “new station”.
2UE has changed their playlist recently. They have added more easy listening songs, similar to what you would hear on Smooth, but they are also skewing much older.
I think if ACE radio can put on a few extra announcers from 10am-3pm, 3-8pm, 8pm-12am from next year, similar to what Smooth does, then they might see a ratings lift.
But they need to stop cutting off the music at the top of the hour for ads, as they are still doing this and it doesn’t sound good at all.
Finally becoming a Serious Easy Listening/Oldies Station 2UE is.
Yes I’ve noticed that on 4BH too.
I had a listen in, they are still playing Queen I want to break free. Not real easy listening, but then again I am comparing it to 2CH. I don’t think they would of played that track before SEN came along. I am sure Smooth has this song on high rotation. I’d like them to play Innuendo by Queen .
Yes, Smooth plays that song, along with “A Kind of Magic” & “Don’t Stop Me Now”, among a number of others.
Any word on what the ACE line up will be?
Also interested in how they differentiate between 3mp and Magic in Melbourne
Assume the stations will still run 9NEWS
My bet they run a different log in Melbourne for Magic. 4BH/2UE may take the 3MP log.
Agree. 2UE definitely sounds too automated at the moment.
But I hope this is the only inspiration that they take from Smooth. It would be a pity to see a station that plays a lot of rare stuff adopt a bland and ‘safe’ playlist. Hopefully, being on AM, 2UE will be able to avoid this fate.
