No men’s BBL on the ABC.
It thought Channel nine owns 2gb as well
If you’re after a laugh you’ll enjoy the replies to this Tweet…
the thing is - cricket is the thing that brings them in. it’s the other content that makes people stay.
people put the cricket on in the car and get out. next time they get in no cricket is on but something else is that grabs them. thats how you get listeners. give them an incentive to tune in and a reason to stay.
there is no incentive to stay now.
i see it now… Nine News radio. all Nine all the time.
It will be interesting to see what they air from Saturday when there’s no live sport on.
Or not. If it’s just talk programmes ceasing, perhaps the broadcast around the races will go ahead if considered live sport. Anyhow, seemed like he only had those four days lined up.
@TV.Cynic and others in Queensland, are you able to record and upload TV news bulletin coverage (if any) of this announcement?
I’m surprised this got a mention at all in any news bulletin considering very few people listened or even knew MSR existed. Didn’t notice anything in Nine’s Sydney bulletin.
Listening now, a tirade of callers with support. Its a bit sad, considering live radio is stopping. Live radio keeps people company and people can ring in and talk.
Personally 2ue should have kept going, there was more talkback compared to 2GB. It would of been flexible.
I didn’t see any reports in QLD.
I’m not surprised, Jason Morrison is news director and isn’t Brenden Wood their social media man? Both love radio.
I hope Roy & HG pop up somewhere. I was really getting into their show. They’re just as funny now as they always were.
Interestingly Jason Morrison argued at the time of the merger that Macquarie should not ditch 2UE but should stick with it as a genuine talkback alternative to 2GB. This was on the basis that the crossover in listeners between the 2 stations wasn’t great and 2UE was bringing in listeners that didn’t listen to 2GB, thereby maximising Macquarie’s listener base. He said that if 2UE went, he thought most of its listeners would too and wouldn’t switch to 2GB. Seems that his gut feeling was right!
Yes indeed. This obsession with not having 2 competing stations is crazy when they own them both. Such a narrow minded and flawed business strategy. The BBC openly welcome competition competition between Radio 1 and 2 in particular. And the CEO of NorthWest Airlines famously said he didn’t care if his passengers crossed the Atlantic on a plane with a blue tail or a red tail (referring to the then NorthWest/KLM joint venture). Very poor decision to kill off 2UE.
I was a dedicated 2UE listener and went to Smooth 95.3, WSFM 101.7 and streaming. I very rarely listen to 2GB after I got sick of Hadley some years ago and sick of Jones many years ago. In Canberra I don’t listen to 2CC since it became a near full-time relay of 2GB.
You prove Jason’s point admirably! Was a big mistake on Macquarie’s part to assume 2UE listeners would either switch to 2GB or remain glued to whatever 954 was transmitting.
It’s the same reason Mix106.5 always did “alright” over the years. It only existed as an alternative for those who didn’t like Kyle and weren’t as alternate as Nova.
What a waste for MML if they’re only going to air highlights.
I suggest throw at least SOME money behind it for the overflow 2GB announcers to get a decent gig.
Then the answer is obvious for Nine. Next on the list is to trial an alternative talk radio station to compliment 2GB and the others.
I doubt they’ll reinstate 2UE, etc. but boy would it be nice!
The only Sydney talk radio I listen to these days is George and Paul on 2GB weekends. Always started the day with John Stanley when he was on 2UE breakfast but now stream 3AW first thing in the morning for a lighter alternative. I know I’m missing out on Sydney/NSW news but I can get that online without subjecting myself to Sydney breakfast radio.
I generally listen to podcasts if I want some mental stimulation or a laugh and my own music when I want to relax. Smooth and WS have become too repetitive. I usually find myself aimlessly jumping around the dial so I tend to stick to my own curated content while driving.
