As they should. Deb is a very versatile and capable presenter, you wouldn’t want to lose her entirely. I think this is a sideways step for her- she likes radio and gets her own show.
Especially 10 which Deb previously worked for. I still think it was a big mistake for 10 sacking her after the news revolution of 2011 failed.
9NEWS weekend ratings will drop with GG. The ratings this week gave DK a clear run against 7 this week/
I don’t think so. Yes, Deb’s ratings this week have been very good. But, Georgie used to win on weekends too. All of the anchors who have presented on 9 (including Pete) have lost nights to 7 this year in Sydney, and have each won some too. These fluctuations suggest management need to perhaps reassess some of their content that they are putting to air. But, it seems viewers trust most of the anchors that front 9 News in Sydney, including Mark Burrows as main fill-in, and I can’t see that changing in the short term.
It has nothing to do with ‘luck’. They did whatever they needed to do to ensure that would happen - even if it means pushing another presenter (Steve Price) out of a timeslot he started hosting in a few months ago…
It did a bit given that they didn’t even have a radio division 6 months ago.
Saturday 14 December-
Alicia Loxley is back presenting in Melbourne with Clint Stanaway presenting sport and Madeline Slattery presenting weather this weekend.
Mark Burrows is presenting in Sydney with Rob Canning presenting sport tonight.
I’m so surprised Deb is still at Nine tbh. I can’t believe the way they have treated her recently to accommodate other presenters… Sounds similar to what happened with Julie Snook tbh… quietly Cutting air time.
Seems like a bit of a demotion not a promotion to me. When you have one of Australias and NSW’s finest journalists, you don’t shove them in front of a mic on radio.
You get them out there, covering stories and delivering them to people in a visual manner to resonate with audiences.
I don’t see this lasting, and I can see her going elsewhere at the end of 2020
Saturday (14.12.2019) - Sunday (15.12.2019): Samantha Heathwood is presenting in Brisbane this weekend. Dominque Loudon is presenting sport and Ebony Cavallaro is on weather.
It’s to my understanding that Georgie Gardner was also a reporter for Ten News back in the 90s before she moved to Seven, then Nine in 2002.
Especially when Nine were recently quite happy to let Sonia Kruger go to Seven - a presenter who enjoyed far more stability than Deborah Knight who’s been continually shafted from high profile roles, despite the fact that both joined Nine at/around the same time.
Having been used on just about every major news/current affairs program on the Nine Network except for 60 Minutes at some point over the past eight years or so (let alone her previous work at Ten over a decade or more), what more does Deb need to prove to the network?!
I personally wouldn’t be overly surprised if Nine gave Deborah Knight the radio position as a “sweetner” to prevent her defecting to Seven or 10 News First. Although if either of Nine’s main commercial rivals are smart, they’ll make a better attempt to poach Deb at the next available opportunity anyway.
We’ll probably never know the full/real story behind what lead to Julie Snook departing Nine back in May, but it was certainly interesting how she was effectively punished with less airtime after “Jacketgate” unlike Amber Sherlock who from a Sydney market perspective, continued to recieve Monday-Thursday airtime at 3pm, 4pm and 6pm!
You do realise radio pays very well, usually better than TV? Plus she still gets to do news on 9? She wouldn’t get this chance with 7 or 10 neither have radio interests.
I don’t get it? “The way they treated her”?
She’s had it pretty good. She’s had consistent work from Nine since she started.
Deborah was given a chance. A permanent role by Nine and for multiple reasons that may or may not have been directly her fault, Nine clearly thought she wasn’t right for the role or they wouldn’t have replaced her.
They would have replaced Georgie with Karl and had Karl and Deborah.
As far as I can see, she had her chance to prove herself, a whole year and it didn’t work out.
Over several years.
Remember when Deborah Knight was passed over for the postion of Today newsreader in 2014 in favour of Sylvia Jefferies? Or when Deb lost Financial Review Sunday when that show she presented was axed (probably wouldn’t have been if the Nine/Fairfax merger happened 3-4 years earlier, but that’s beside the point)?
Passed over for the position over Sylvia?
How do you know Deb even applied? And what makes her better than Sylvia? She was at Nine longer than Deb so maybe she was considered next in line?
Seems like natural progression to me. Sylvia was Weekend Today newsreader at the time and moved to weekdays and same with Tim Gilbert on sport for Weekend Today, promoted to the main show.
As for Financial Review Sunday, the show itself was axed. Not Deb or they would have replaced her if she was the reason for its axing. Was just bad luck she was hosting the show they wanted to axe.
There are so many other people who’ve been at the network longer than Deb so I’m not sure why so many people think she’s always hard done by. You gotta work your way up in this world sometimes.
#1 radio station in Sydney.
Cross promotion potential is huge for Nine News
Sounds like a smart play to me.
I don’t know whether Deb would’ve applied for the role of Nine’s new Today newsreader in 2014 (I highly doubt these jobs are publicly advertised for), but surely she would’ve been one of the candidates?
From memory, Nine even aired a “Today’s new newsreader revealed” promo which utilised a silhouette that looked suspiciously like an all black cut-out of Deborah Knight!
The reason why so many people (including myself) think Deborah Knight is always hard done by is because we remember how Nine was her lifeline in 2011 after Ten dumped her from a fairly high profile position at the network: Sydney 5pm co-presenter, a role she had for about 5-6 years at that point in time.
Now it would’ve been unrealistic to expect Deborah Knight to eventually replace Peter Overton, but still I would’ve thought that by now she’d have a stable position as one of the biggest stars of Nine’s news/current affairs department.
This post makes me very So much wrong with it.
How, exactly? @David is entitled to his point of view and has raised some good points.
Deb obviously can’t return to the Today team as newsreader, the show needs a clean break from the disaster of 2019 which she was a part of. Nine clearly views Georgie as a better newsreader, so she has been passed over for the weekend news reading.
I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said here- which is not what @David said at all. He was suggesting that Deb didn’t earn her positions, when that is evidently not the case, which is a terrible, hurtful suggestion.
I wanted to express that I disagree heavily with @David post without getting into an argument about it, which happens so much on this forum. In fact, the issue of Deb Knight not getting the newsreader seat in 2014 caused me to be put on moderator queue. So, I’m just going to bite my tongue , which I’ve found is the best thing to do in these circumstances.
