Sydney sports reporter Rob Canning is in London to cover the Cricket World Cup.
Thatâs a plum gig!
Today is a decade since Bruce Paige finished up on Nine News Queensland. This is from his final night on the desk (or so it seemed):
Rob Penfold was interviewed on Today this morning talking about highlights of 43 years at Nine.
Despite his retirement he will do occasional feature stories for Nine and he will be working on next yearâs US Election he said.
Itâs been mentioned a couple of times in stories that he possibly needs to continue to work for Nine in some capacity for visa requirements.
Sophie Walsh presenting Morning News & Afternoon News in Sydney this week.
Friday 28 June -
Carrie-Anne Greenbank is presenting Afternoon News in Melbourne again today.
I think Dougal Beatty might be filling in for Brett McLeod this weekend.
With Brett McLeod away this week Dougal Beatty is presenting First at Five News and Melbourne News this weekend.
Is this the first time Dougal Beatty has presented a 6pm bulletin?
Saturday 29 June -
Mark Burrows presenting in Sydney tonight.
He presented on Christmas Day in 2017
Just from watching Nine News Sydney tonight, maybe iâm in the minority over this, but I actually think Mark Burrowsâ presenting has improved from when he first started back in 2016. I think heâs quite a decent newsreader now.
A happy 10th anniversary to Andrew Lofthouse and Melissa Downes who started presenting together for the first time on this day in 2009.
The Nine News Queensland weeknight team has remained unchanged since then.
Well, I agree, heâs improved and is very competent. However he did present long before 2016. He was a regular presenter many years ago and even was the news presenter on Today on Saturday at one point, Iâm sure.
Agree. From what iâve seen recently, his delivery seems to flow better, previously it was quite stilted.
If it wasnât for the fact that Peter Overton is younger than him (I think Burrows is early 60s? which would make him about 10 years older), I think he could have succeeded Overton as the main Sydney 6pm newsreader. I think he has a bit of a âWalter Cronkiteâ aura about him, also due to his lengthy reporting pedigree.
I personally think if Mark Burrows was really that good of a newsreader, we wouldâve seen Nine promote him to the main or even secondary chair in 2009, 2005 or 2002.
Personally, Iâd see someone like Jayne Azzopardi as the future of Nine News Sydney more than Mark BurrowsâŚprovided that she receives more regular Morning/4pm/Sydney 6pm presenting roles soon.
With Jayne Azzopardiâs current position being not entirely dissimilar to the one Sarah Harris held at Nine before she defected to Ten in mid-2013, I could imagine Jayne being someone that Seven & Ten would like to have at their networks soon because letâs face it, a not insignificant proportion of news presenters/reporters on Sydney commercial TV fit into either one of three categories:
*Those at other networks who want to make it at Nine.
*Those at Nine who were previously seen on other networks (especially Ten).
*Those at other networks who established their careers at Nine.
