As much as I really hope we won’t lose either reporter to the Sydney newsroom in the foreseeable future, I’d even prefer seeing Jayne Azzopardi (who IIRC, was at one point rumoured to get the US bureau promotion about 2-3 years ago which at the time went to Lizzie Pearl) or Sophie Walsh given a promotion to the US bureau before Karl Stefanovic.

Not sure about everyone else, but I personally think Karl Stefanovic would benefit from spending a few years away from the Australian TV/media landscape (including distant roles like Nine News US bureau chief) before possibly rebuilding his career later on.

I disagree, it should (always) be the best person for the job. I don’t understand why people are condemning Karl based on his personal choice, which if I may point out is neither unethical nor morally wrong. The wokeness in a lot of people now will be the cause of the downfall of this civilisation.

I think Karl should be given the US Bureau role,a stint going back to serious news reporting where we don’t see his personality will help to re-build his career.

Jayne and Sophie could do stints in the US Bureau but I think the Bureau Chief position has to go to a senior journo- not only someone with international reporting experience but someone who could mentor those juniors they go through there.

Indeed both deserve the opportunity to further their careers and it will probably happen in the future.
Dougal Beatty and Neary Ty from Melbourne newsroom would also great in the US in the future.

Had a stint in the US in late 2013- early 2014

Here’s my dark horse for either US or UK correspondent - one of Sydney’s Tim Davies or Brisbane’s Rob Morrison. I reckon either can cut it stateside or in Europe.

The Nine News Queensland newsroom has lost another reporter in Isabelle Mullen, who last week followed Joel Dry in moving up the road to Seven.

A list of notable presenters/reporters that QTQ has lost this decade (not necessarily in chronological order) -

  • Heather Foord (retired in 2011)
  • Melissa Mallet and Cameron Price (both sacked after the Choppergate scandal)
  • Alyshia Gates (now at SBS)
  • Bence Hamerli (now at 10 News First Sydney)
  • Sophie Walsh (now in the Sydney newsroom)
  • Zara James (also now in the Sydney newsroom)
  • Joel Dry (now up the road at Seven)
  • Isabelle Mullen (also now up the road at Seven)
  • Michael Best (moved to the Europe bureau, but is now about to become news director of Nine News Perth)
  • Davina Smith (now presenting the national morning news and the Sydney 4pm news)
  • Sylvia Jeffreys (became Today newsreader and will present a documentary about the 80s on Nine tonight)
  • Carrie-Anne Greenbank (now in the Melbourne newsroom)
  • Jayde Cotic (now in Melbourne, but her employment status remains unknown)
  • Darren Curtis
  • Alex Bernhardt (now a Sydney reporter for ACA)
  • Clare Hunter (now media comms at RACQ)
  • Phil Willmington (retired)
  • Spencer Jolly (retired)
  • Nat Wallace (now in the Sydney newsroom)
  • Sam Squiers (now based in Wollongong)

I reckon if Nine News Queensland loses the ratings this year, the position of Amanda Patterson has got to come under review. She has literally turned this bulletin into one of the most tabloid news bulletins you can ever imagine.

Paige started in 1994 for Nine. Hitchener started in 1974.

No contest there

Two legends of Nine News are still going strong at Nine - Tracy Grimshaw and Elizabeth Hayes.

She joined 10 Melbourne newsroom late last month.

Does anybody know if there is a reason why the majority of Nine’s presenters and reporters in Sydney are wearing black tonight? Amber Sherlock being one notable exception (of course).

Don’t forget Jo Hall!

Speaking of legends, one that has recently retired is Perth sports reporter Bob Harnett after 32 years at Nine. His last story was in early February but I have just realised this now.

Still presents Sport on morning editions. Sometimes regional too.

Wow, what a list we’ve got there. While there are some which naturally would’ve left for bigger & better things or are happily retired, there’s also others (particularly Joel Dry & Isabelle Mullen, since they’re still in the same market but at Seven) QTQ really should’ve fought harder to retain the services of IMO.

If Nine News Queensland loses 2019, sadly I wouldn’t be overly surprised if at least one of the main/weeknight presenters were to leave the news service!

From the weeknight team of the early noughties, during which (National) Nine News was a clear ratings leader in south-east Queensland, only Wally Lewis remains. As for the others -

  • Bruce Paige - moved south to Nine Gold Coast News in 2012
  • Jillian Whiting - moved to presenting Nine Gold Coast News for a bit in the late noughties before returning to Seven
  • John Schluter - moved up the road to Seven in 2007 before retiring in 2013
  • Melissa Downes (then weekend presenter) - promoted to weeknights in 2009 when Heather Foord decided to take a step back and present Extra, which itself was axed in 2009. That caused a domino effect - Bruce Paige stepped down from the newsdesk, Andrew Lofthouse earned a promotion to weeknights (he previously co-presented on weekends with Eva Milic), Foord returned to the newsdesk on weekends and Milic moved to presenting weather on weekends.
  • Steve Haddan - no longer at Channel Nine.

It was a case of musical chairs at QTQ! The current weeknight team (Lofthouse/Downes/Lewis/Youngberry) has remained unchanged for nearly a decade now.

A few more to add to the list if I may:

  • Andrew Trewin (Left in 2011, doing his own thing now)
  • Andrew Slack (retired)
  • Alex Smith
  • Kath Landers (working overseas)
  • Sean Power (now at Seven)
