Tennis fans would be happy with all the tennis that is on. The United Cup gets a main channel for most of its run (moves to 9Gem during Tipping Point, News, ACA times), while the Brisbane International will be airing on 9GO.
Apart from that, nothing to see here…
ALICIA LOXLEY AND TOM STEINFORT HOST MELBOURNE’S NEW YEAR’S EVE SHOW
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31, AT 11.00PM ON CHANNEL 9 AND 9NOW
Mark the end of the year with the 9Network’s 2025: Year in Review and City of Melbourne’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks this Wednesday at 11.00pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
Before the midnight fireworks light up Melbourne’s skyline, 9News Melbourne anchors Alicia Loxley and Tom Steinfort will look back at twelve monumental months. From the hallowed turf of the MCG to the corridors of power in Washington, we revisit the headlines that mattered most to Victorians.
Celebrate local pride with Neale Daniher named Australian of the Year, the opening of the Metro Tunnel, major sporting moments including the thrilling AFL Grand Final and the Australian Open, and the welcome return of the Moomba parade.
The special also examines the return of Donald Trump to the White House, a look inside the historic Erin Patterson trial, and the shock ousting of a royal.
Andrea Salmon, Nine Melbourne Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to once again partner with the City of Melbourne to bring the city’s largest New Year’s Eve celebration directly into the homes of Victorians and to share this great Melbourne moment that brings in 2026 with a truly world-class show.”
From the moments that left us speechless to the events that sparked a global conversation, tune in for 2025: A Year in Review on New Year’s Eve, before ringing in 2026 with the City of Melbourne’s magnificent fireworks and laser display.
This is quite well produced so far but I’m finding it a bit dreary. I always enjoyed the NYE telecasts with the fireworks focus on both Seven and Nine.
Is there a chance that cost cutting has occurred from either Nine or the City of Melbourne?
I’d say it’s cost cutting from Nine. The City of Melbourne spent as much money on tonight’s fireworks and laser show as last year, if the reports are correct.
Seems like the City of Melbourne were responsible for the Melbourne fireworks coverage rather than Nine.
Shame that Melbourne didn’t have a live broadcast leading into the fireworks
I do wonder if there is a quirky back story to it becoming a Channel 9 tradition or if it’s just one of those things with no explanation.
Could we see HSV7 pick it up next year?

Nine with a renewed Disney film deal?
That’s standard. No network would pay for an event as big as that.
It seems to be whenever there’s a Winter Olympics ahead, this gets a run. Expect “Eddie the Eagle” and the like too. Saw they had “I, Tonya” the other night and I think inspired Nine’s themed Today ident with Karl and Sarah.
