Nine Network 2024

Sounds like the Melbourne Cup is going to Nine? Speaking to Neil Mitchell this morning, Eddie McGuire mentioned he’d been in Sydney the last couple of days “for the launch of the Melbourne Cup, and Nine’s upfronts”.

It’s unlikely Eddie would host the Melbourne Cup if it’s on Seven, so can we safely assume the cup has moved to Nine?

Could that be this year’s? Doesn’t he host 10’s?

Ahh yes, you could be right.

where can we watch a replay of upfronts

Yeah where can we?

Melbourne Cup on 9. 9 has all the sports 7 had just 8 years ago. 2016 7 had the Olympics, Tennis and Melbourne Cup with all 3 on the rival network

Very surprised, good to see. Thought they’d be heading back to Seven.

Nine hasn’t shown horse racing for 20 years (?) but it will have 14 months to get its team assembled. Will it rely on people like Simon O’Donnell and Ken Callander, or just sign up experts who are currently part of 10’s coverage?

Could be the return of “Horses” as the end credits too…

Interesting, you would expect that to widen the loss they will make from that.

Eddie could host 2024 MC again

I recall they aired the MRC events around 2010, their cricket commentator Simon O’Donnell (also a racing enthusiast/owner AFAIK) anchored

Pretty sure Cameron Williams played a big role as well hosting the coverage.

It’s not that surprising considering what the VRC wants (a broadcast dedicated exclusively on what’s happening at Flemington) doesn’t align with how Seven covers horse racing (i.e., focusing on multiple states/tracks). Hence why Nine are their preferred bidder.

Shame. 7 has done a good job of horse racing over recent years. Would’ve been nice to see the Melbourne Cup back on 7.

Agree, but I dont think Seven were planning on providing the Melbourne Cup sole / exclusive coverage on the day. They would have had to share coverage with NSW races.

Nine will be able to provided full coverage on the day without any interruptions from interstate races. Plus Nine has the capability to provide and promote a larder audience than what the 10 Network could offer.

News Corp understands Channel Seven withdrew in anger after it became clear Channel Nine was the Victoria Racing Club’s preferred bidder.

What does that look like?

Good article from Zoe Samios (who I haven’t seen many articles from this year) and Sam Buckingham Jones in AFR, covering everything:

Within the story (owned by Nine), states Nine have not yet signed any deal … nor have VRC with Tabcorp.

Eddie and Leila fronted Nine’s coverage of the Ceremonies when they last aired the Games back in 2012
