Nine (NBN)

I’m going to go on a ledge and predict something has been included in the agreement to keep a live local bulletin at 6. It benefits Nine, and Nine made the sale - I’m guessing with some conditions

I fail to see the ratings completely collapse if Nine News Sydney is broadcast instead as the majority of the content is the same. For viewers outside of the Hunter Valley, the Sydney News will likely be more relevant and the production value is done to a higher standard. Plus all regions would gain a dedicated local bulletin like the rest of the WIN markets. Whilst it’s sad to see another regional operation shut down, there are benefits in doing so.

Its not that we dont see your point, but it depends how those negotiating the deal at Nine see it. If Nine were giving NBN News 6 months to prove its feasibility, then thats part of the problem - Nine execs potentially believe the Sydney News is superior. Also Nine News Gold Coast is separate to National Nine News Brisbane which is potentially could happen even if Nine did end up retaining NBN.

Also, as it would no longer be a Nine produced bulletin, then Nine possibly believe based on experience that the WIN produced product would be lower quality.

Using WIN’s efforts in Southern NSW and tying it to NSW being a NRL state is not as valid an argument as one may think - the further south you go, the further you head into AFL territory - the NSW/Vic border is not the invisible line between the 2 territories - one could argue even Canberra and ACT arent strictly NRL despite Canberra not having a team in the AFL.

Its all wait and see. WIN’S track record gives us some guidance as to what might happen

WIN’s ‘dedicated local’ bulletins are a bit of an illusion at this point. They are 90% statewide bulletins these days with weather about the only thing purely local. If they could source Nine reports and swallow their pride a little they could transition to an NBN style bulletin elsewhere relatively easily if they wanted to.

I logged in, saw 30+ unread posts on NBN, thought something substantial had happened, but no: it’s just Media Spy being Media Spy. :face_with_peeking_eye::rofl::rofl:

Nah, unlikely to hear anything meaningful until 30th June (or likely sometime after) when WIN take the keys.

I think the main thing is from May 21, watch this space. Thats when NEC shareholders vote

I’d expect that if a bunch of Jets supporters did to the office block where Nine/NBN/whatever they are what Eels supporers did to the old Cumberland Oval…IYKYK.

(and no, it wasn’t me - I have an alibi. If we make the grand final and win it…different story ).

No way would Nine allow WIN produced 5.30pm bulletins be branded as 9 News. Nine would rather WIN News was dropped altogether so as to concentrate on the 5pm lead in program on a national basis, including regional areas.

Not to mention the use of a lot of VNR style content that makes WIN News unwatchable.

If Nine wanted to go down the path of the 5pm show (Tipping Point) being left in that slot, then WIN News would be at 4:30pm along with Nine News Gold Coast with the option of screening an encore on 9Go at 6:30pm. Nine has allowed WIN to have local news at 5:30 because Nine realises a local news presence helps, but at the same time feels metro editions of Nine News are superior to regional productions.

We could discuss this for hours, much like financial analysts predicting whether or not the RBA will increase interest rates.

Letz try and focus on what NBN is doing rather than what they wont be.

Did anyone actually watch the Dawn Service on NBN from Nobbys Beach in at Newcastle at 5am on Anzac Day?

No point investing when there is zero growth to be had.

Without WIN, Nine’s affiliate revenue will be zero. It is mutually beneficial for both businesses to be as they are. Don’t forget the higher the percentage paid to Nine the more that will be cut from their news division. Why do you think they cut half their news resources when they returned to Nine?

Same with the cuts to Tasmania’s news and centralisation of news operations over the past 15 years, increased costs particularly from Nine made it mandatory to make WIN News that shadow of what it used to be.

WIN News also likely has an average viewer age of 60+ as a result of these enforced cuts.

Just a question, ii noticed that a couple of weeks ago Jane Goldsmith presented National Nine Late News on a Sunday. Is this a regular thing? If so, if NBN News (in becoming a Ninr affiliate) no longer have one of theie staff present a National news bulletin or could Jane Goldsmith be bound for bigger things?

Unless she gains a position with Nine, she would become a WIN employee. It becomes up to WIN then as to what they want to do with these resources when they gain control, depending on whatever clauses may be included in the transaction post clearance.

That’s a somewhat fair take. Also fair that The Block, NRL. ACA. MFAS etc deliver WIN bumper programming. To be spending only 50% of your revenue on programming seems a decent split to me. With that comes all the the promos and marketing too.

Very easy to say when one is outside looking in. You are looking at this on face value, not looking at the forty years of evolution in these contracts and the external pressures on top of that. Don’t complain about the state of WIN News if you think 50 per cent is fair, can’t have it both ways.

Since when has WIN News been of any benefit to say Nine News? Is much easier for Nine to send in their own reporters and crews into WIN areas to cover breaking news events than to leverage off WIN resources that mostly do not exist.

I have no idea what you are talking about or what you are referring to. But if you are answering me, I will break it down for you

  1. Jane Goldsmith has been presenting the Late News on Nine on Sunday nights
  2. If Jane Goldsmith’s services are not retained by Nine, then Nine will need to replace her with someone like say, Peter Overton
  3. If Jane Goldsmith does not join the Nine, shewill most probably bound for WIN
  4. If Nine decides to recruit Jane Goldsmith for Nine Sydney (re the question of bound for bigger things), then Nine may retain her as a fill in presenter across Sydney produced news and current affairs programming

She is employed by NBN (an NBN newsreader), Nine leverages that resource which it can as NBN is a subsidiary. That resource goes to WIN once the transaction completes so Nine would have to find someone else to fulfil that function, unless it can find a vacant position that she would be happy to move to within Nine. In the off chance, Nine and WIN may even have come to an arrangement to continue collaboration in this space, but we won’t know until sometime in the new financial year.
