Nine (NBN)

In the event of WIN assuming control of NBN TV will the play out be transferred to media hub in line with other WIN feeds from other areas currently served by WIN?

I’d say that would happen pretty quickly.

Be interesting to see how quickly they get rid of the main SD channel that NBN has too.

Very much a theory sadly. Since deregulation under Hawke and Keating, broadcasting regulation and oversight by ACMA is very sadly lacking.

Shareholders will be more than happy to shed the operating cost of a television station and news service operating for a small population (a significant amount almost half are already served by other assets) over such a large area, especially when the company will get 50% of revenue at limited cost under the affiliation agreement with Win. It’s a Win Win pardon the pun, Nine stands stronger selling it off, Win gains influence and is in a far better position as a private company and under their model of pre packaged centralised local news to maintain the service in the years ahead.

I wonder if Jane Goldsmith will continue to work on the today show here and there after NBN is sold.

I’ve said earlier, I think she’ll either jump over to Nine, or leave altogether. Unless WIN has some higher purpose for her.

If whatever WIN does bombs, I think there is some scope for Seven to get in there with a 7 News Newcastle in the old NBN News format. Maybe even poach from ex-NBN people. They have radio outlets to cross-pomote and even use their resources. I know they won’t do it ($$$), but it’s not a bad idea and worth at least having a think about.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Nine and Win have signed a TSA similar to the NRN deal in 2017.

If seven has any sense I reckon Newcastle will be lucky to get a 30 minute local bulletin followed by a 6 30 pm national and international news bulletins similar to other areas but again I’m not holding my breath (in a off topic message that’s better suited to the 7 news nsw regional thread)

If WIN did by default follow the existing arrangements in other areas with WIN News bulletins, bit would be a case of opportunity knocks. But that said, Seven haven’t re-entered the local news market in Canberra or Wollongong, so unfortunately aren’t likely to do it in Newcastle either

Technical problems on NBN News tonight…

The first story was about the Lake Cargelligo murders with a live cross to Eddy Meyer. He had the wrong words on the teleprompter and struggled through the live cross. Then they quickly cut back to Natasha who looked a bit confused afterwards.

Has anyone noticed win is hiring a programming coordinator?

The role specifically mentioned NBN.

I’d say yes & fairly quickly they would want media hub to take control of all feeds.

Not sure if this will complicate matters for WIN in buying NBN.

They are STILL doing playout for Ten here in Nth NSW. So we are still getting WIN Gold on LCN 55 etc.

Can they hand over playout to Ten in time? If not, would this be considered as having undue influence over more than 1 commercial TV licence in an aggregated market? Would they have sufficient bandwidth to send both a Nine and Ten feed to Nth NSW sites?

Perhaps playout for nrn and NBN could switch once the sale is completed.

I don’t know the answer but I don’t think it’s excessive control as NBN will be owned by WIN, and Ten (NRN) is owned by Ten. The fact that WIN may be handling playout for both is probably of no concern as its the licencees that are what determine control.

I agree. WIN managing playout of NRN would no doubt be down to a contract or short-term agreement with Ten, nothing more.

Local News will never return to Seven Canberra period! Why disturb the number 1 rating bulletin in that timeslot and replace with a shoddy bare budget bulletin. They tried it a few times in the Prime era, and each time the Sydney bulletin was restored, the ratings went up.

And as for Wollongong, not a chance either.

I didnt say that they would return local news in Canberra. I gave Canberra and Wollongong not getting a local news return when WIN News went to 5:30 as the reason Seven wont try local news in Newcastle at 6pm

Except that WIN are still airing Gold, and no Nickelodeon here either. Ten wouldn’t be airing Gold.

Ten is the licence holder and is deemed to have control. WIN can’t just add channels to a service they don’t have a licence. There must have some sort of agreement between Ten and WIN to maintain Gold in the transition or while WIN maintains the playout on its behalf. It might only be temporary until Ten takes over that function. who knows
