ok, i think we can move on now
WIN and Nine need to merge under new management. Get rid of Australian television’s version of the bottom math class and Wollongong’s/Bermuda’s answer to Jurassic Park, and get people who have a little bit more of a clue.
Except that it wont end up with that - we’ll end up with basically the status quo (or worse, greater WIN influence)
Nine have to be a media company who happens to have some FTA licences, rather than a FTA broadcaster that wants to play in a bigger sandpit.
Doesn’t bode well for Seven Media Group’s impending rebrand, not that Stokes or his junior would care.
I’m all for WIN to GTFO, and NEC basically to be broken up. Once Bruce dies, the family needs to sell. The value will go down quick and they’ll be left with two worthless assets.
If you look at what’s happening in the US, the direction seems pretty obvious. The big media companies are getting broader, while also trying to separate the declining linear TV businesses from streaming, studios, content etc.
Australia is probably too small to copy that exactly, but I do think Nine has an identity problem. “Nine” still basically means Channel Nine. Nine, 9Now, nine.com.au. It still feels like a TV network that happens to own Stan, newspapers and other media assets.
I think the company needs a new identity above all of that. Something like Endeavor or Endeavor Media. A broader entertainment and media company, with Nine then going back to being the TV network brand.
Under that you’d have Nine, 9Now, Stan, Nine News, SMH, The Age, the other publishing assets, podcasts, digital, social and whatever else they build or acquire.
It’s a shame they never somehow ended up with Kayo or Fox Sports because that would have been another huge pillar.
I’d also get rid of the idea of nine.com.au as the main digital news brand and build Nine News properly across TV, web, apps, social, podcasts and streaming. Eventually even a 24-hour streaming news service.
Basically Nine should be one of the brands in the company, not the name of the whole company.
Seee…that would be smart. Nine are not smart. WIN are not smart. A baked potato would be smarter.
This is why both companies need to be merged under new management and shareholders.
Still thought they kept the wrong website, renaming the 9 News website and app to nine.com.au instead of merging everything into 9News.com.au.
Should have gone back to the future with ninemsn.com.au
Although I am sure Microsoft don’t want to partner with them again.
Amanda Laing exit sparks internal turmoil over Nine network culture
The departure of senior Nine exec Amanda Laing has unleashed a wave of frustration internally, with multiple staff describing a business struggling with decision-making, culture, and commercial execution despite possessing a programming line-up many competitors would envy.
While Nine insist the move was discussed with Laing and part of a wider restructure, it is believed Laing was blindsided by the move, given she was at the Free TV event in Canberra this month talking about Nine’s future and also played a part in the network’s upfronts last week.
Many at Nine say the job she was handed was enormous, and was always going to be difficult to excel in.
An insider said Laing’s relationship with current Nine boss Matt Stanton had changed in recent times, believing it “blew up her confidence”.
The insider argued Laing’s departure raised questions about how Nine was apportioning responsibility.
Which is why the company may need to ‘regress’ in order to progress — by which I mean either reverting the corporate brand back to PBL or reshaping that brand into something along the lines of Publishing Broadcasting Connect, for instance.
The issue seems to be more than just the brand. Looks like the insides are rotting away…
I always found her appointment worrying, with much loved stalwart Michael Healy still there.
From the outside, it really seems to be (and always has been for a couple of decades now) him running the show, despite her actually supposed to be his direct superior.
I think even questionable appointments in Sneesby and Stanton would be leaning to and relying on Healy a lot, also despite Stanton being big boss.
Nine Newspapers and Stan (and previously Nine Radio) just made the executive structure more or a mess.
I think, truly, Healy needs to go for a fresh start. But after what, 40+ years at the company and all his TV experience and knowledge and more or less success, some are unwilling to let him go. And he no doubt has friends in high places, including the legacy Packer group in McGuire, Gyngell & Co.

Nine staff revolt, rumours swirl after axing
Nine bosses face fallout over AFR mess
Fresh from sacking Karl Stefanovic and negotiating Nine’s $145 million-a-year NRL broadcast deal, did Nine’s increasingly hands-on chairman Peter Tonagh intervene and make the call to help Nine executive and Australian Financial Review (AFR) editor-in-chief James Chessell out the door sooner ahead of his planned departure?
Nine moves to rebuild podcast ranks with off-platform strategy
Nine is moving to rebuild its podcasting bench months after selling its radio assets to the Laundy family, with the network recruiting a “head of podcasts”.
The new role will oversee its 9Podcasts portfolio, including news, entertainment and sport, with a focus on strategy and distribution.
