In light of the above posts, this may not go down well - but the rumour mill is he’s going to Mediaworks to do podcasting.
Looks like it won’t since it’ll have its own app and website. And SEN programming in Australia will not be simulcast when Sport Nation launch.
A number of redundancies at Mediaworks this week. Gotta pay for Simon Barnett somehow lol
Can’t be too many more areas to trim you wouldn’t think, on air at least
It’s basically Radio Sport 2.0. Nothing fancy there.
Is he not happy on The Platform anymore? I hope it’s another Paul Brennan-type exit.
Hope I don’t sound horrible saying this but I don’t think a rebrand is going to do much for their audience numbers - in fact, is there much of an audience for sport radio anymore? I know there used to be, but I seem to recall that being ages ago. I don’t know hardly anyone that listens to sport radio these days - but a fair few who stream sport content instead.
you’d have to say as far as YouTube (which is where Mediaworks’ focus seems to be atm, with Garner’s show and a lot of their music brands) The Platform has a bigger more engaged audience. Maybe they’ve offered him a sport radio show on The Sound or something but even then I wonder what the attraction would be. Garner tells anyone who will listen he’s taken an 80% paycut.
@nztv The Sound is described as ‘your home for classic rock’ but, with the arrival (or the return to MediaWorks) of Martin Devlin, what if its classic rock focus combined with sport, similar to Gold Sport (formerly Gold AM)?
I think you’re wrong. Sport is making a big comeback post covid, people are starting to ‘care’, criticise and engage with it more. SENZ just didn’t market well enough and the name doesn’t make sense to people. There is room for sports radio, just has to be done well.

I think that a sport show on The Sound probably wouldn’t work - from day one they’ve been about the music (especially album sides). I know that the farming show on Magic (see above) was a turnoff for several Magic listeners as it didn’t really fit into the format. Plus a lot of rural listeners who would listen to a farming show can’t receive Magic anyway.
Yes and no, sport definitely changed post coronavirus, for sure - Radio Sport shut down entirely.
However I question whether there is enough audience to go around for two sports stations in this country, never mind one; if the latter was the case Gold would be 100% sport, all the time, but they play quite a lot of music on their AM frequencies too. However I will happily eat my words if this new station rates better, although I still feel they will be facing an uphill battle.

Mediaworks:
NZ media companies are facing tough economic times, and our local radio station is no exception. It’s important for us to retain a Taranaki Breakfast show, but due to pressure on costs, Anna’s role has been disestablished and she is sadly leaving

Re the point on whether theyll still take SEN feeds for shows outside of their regular programming, their content manager Rebuen Bradley said in this interview they’ll keep the relationship with SEN for all that
I don’t believe it is employment related but worth strapping in for nonetheless.
Sorry but I’ve never found Andrew Mulligan to be remotely funny - I remember him on ZM with Jason Reeves way back in the day, and my personal opinion was that he tried just a little too hard to be funny, whereas Jason was far more natural.
Having said that I haven’t heard him for years, so I don’t know what he’s like now, he may be different.
