I am not convinced a control room will be built given that a few years ago at Nines upfronts it was stated Nine News Tasmania would be launched on WIN but it never eventuated.
An announcement doesnt mean it will happen. The argument might be it wasn’t economically viable in the current advertising climate

Also noticed NBN News is still on 9Now, given its now technically a WIN product I thought Nine would have kicked it off their platform pretty quick.
The key word here is local. Regional broadcasters have increasingly stretched the definition of local news. A story from Albury can end up in Lismore. A drought story from western NSW can run in Newcastle. Because it’s considered relevant to regional viewers, it’s counted as local content. It’s often not relevant at all.
The question isn’t whether the new format will contain more “local” news. It’s what WIN considers local. Wide regional or statewide stories are not the same thing as genuinely local journalism focused on the community the bulletin serves.
Someone needs to call WIN out.
Claude tells me Australian govt tax incentives to global studios run $500m to $600m a year to shoot global stories. What’s the value of tax incentives to regional media to shoot local stories?
Was any tax incentive provide me to directly encourage spending on live local news? Or just to fund their underlying business model.
And if we are beyond tax incentives and government protections (I mean even the US does this for tech giants) what are we expecting to move the needle then?
So perhaps people were watching for the perception of local news with a local host, set, weather etc - the idea they’re getting local news. If you look at a 10 daytime edition it’s a little similar no. It gives the illusion of an Australian news broadcast but it’s loaded with us and cbs content.
So all this talk about a control room. What’s the point if it’s all pre-recorded? Might as well have done it from Wollongong and moved Tash there or use one of their revolving faces. Seems like an attempt to retain some of their ratings at least.
Perhaps it’s a grander plan to produce other bulletins/updates like those in Western Australia or Darwin.
I wonder if other WIN News offices are miffed they don’t have a studio and control room like Maroochydore and Canberra to provide some serious competition?
Also be interesting to see what happens on the Gold Coast. TV Tonight suggests QTQ News will air at 6pm (TCN everywhere else) but I don’t see a whole bunch of eyeballs interested in Lismore news.
One thing that hasn’t been discussed much is the move from 6pm to 5:30pm.
For decades, Aussie viewers have overwhelmingly chosen to watch local news at 6pm. In Newcastle and Northern NSW, that’s especially true. Moving the bulletin to 5:30 means putting it on at a time when fewer people are home, fewer people have the TV on, and fewer people are available to watch. NNSW wants local news at 6
If WIN is serious about its commitment to local news, it’s a strange decision to move that local news into a timeslot that will reduce its reach and availability
If the goal was to standardise a 30 minute format across the network, I would have preferred the 7 qld model: local news at 6pm, followed by a shortened metro bulletin at 6:30
WIN also had the opportunity to work with Nine to introduce short local news updates on weekends. Instead, viewers are getting less local news, at an earlier time, on less days, when fewer people are watching.

It’s a bigger space than i was expecting.
Nine probably wouldn’t allow WIN to air anything too competitive against Nine Gold Coast news, even Tipping Point at 5pm, so maybe it’ll have to be the Northern Rivers bulletin, which is what NBN did for a large chunk of the time.
I think the dots will go, and a new NBN News logo in the WIN News style will appear.
It was rumoured WIN were going to launch a refreshed graphics package? This would be a great time to do it and roll it out across both the WIN News and NBN News brands.

The control was always going to be built in Newcastle. WIN announcing it today is to reduce the heat they are getting.
Weren’t they building one in Wollongong for NBN anyway?

No it was always going to be one or the other.
