NBN News (2015-Feb 2025)

I was curious and I asked the person who runs television at Nine. NBN News’ annual budget for the whole operation is significantly smaller than Adelaide and Perth, even though it delivers larger audiences and higher shares than both. I was told it’s the ‘golden goose’ of the news network due to low costs but huge numbers.

NNSW is a larger ad market than Adelaide. But Adelaide has more “prestige” do to it being a top 5 capital city market.

That’s interesting, thanks

(1) Viewers are very disapointed when NBN news isn’t on and Sydney airs instead, they want some local stories, if NBN is off they get on social media and complain

(2) It’s about consistency, people know and rely on NBN News to be on air every night at 6.

(3) It’s about the advertisers, imagine business owners who were sold advertising on NBN News for big bucks, but when they are on holidays they switch on to only find some Sydney bulletin they have always watched

The NBN branding has a reputation for being on air “Every night at six” since the 1960s and is successful, why would you change this? There are probably more people watching TV over Christmas with their families compared to any other time so advertiserts are paying for that brand to be on air.

It is the exact same thing with King Street McDonalds… people expect that place to be open 24/7 under the Mcdonalds brand.

People expect NBN News to be on air every night at 6.

Though already twice this year we’ve seen Nine News Sydney at 6pm. People will get used to it, probably more likely to watch Nine News than Seven Newz or no news at all.

And with the general decline jn TV ad revenue, it can only be a matter of time before it’s no longer sustainable every night.

I just explained that’s it’s the most profitable newsroom Nine operates. It also costs the least.

You don’t chop the most profitable parts of your business when you’re under pressure.

I don’t think so. People in Newcastle will never get used to watching 9 news from Sydney at any given time

I didn’t say totally… just the more expensive days like Christmas Day and Good Friday night be under pressure in the coming years… the rest of it should be safe for now.

Ah right. If NBN News went away on Xmas day etc Id say it would be less about profitability and more just about wanting to give people the day off work.

It was only one time judging by a quick look through this thread, and that was due to a major international I.T failure beyond NBN’s control.

They took Nine News Sydney in its entirelty on the night of the Westfield Bondi Junction terror attack

Okay I stand corrected then - apologies

Two nights - neither were public holidays, so drawing the comparison is like saying Seven Local News should be axed in favour of Seven News hour across each state as the metro market attracts move viewers. The only way Nine might consider dropping NBN News on public holidays is if they rebranded it National Nine News in Northern NSW and risk a re-branding backlash

I’ve always found the 6pm NBN News branding to be a bit clunky when there is so much Nine News branding embedded in the reports they air, and when the Nine brand is used for the other 23 hours of the day.

My idea would be

  1. Keep the NBN News logo, watermsrk and opener graphics as is but change the voice over to “This is Nine NBN News”.

  2. The local reports have the NBN News sign offs as is, but the network reports have the original Nine News signoffs. These were never changed consistently anyway. And then the sign offs will match the mic socks in each report.

Or maybe something like “From Nine News, this is NBN News”

The only way that Nine would even consider such a move is if the 6pm edition of National Nine News Sydney went back to half an hour and a NBN Local News half hour rounded out the hour, but even thats unlikely given the numbers NBN returns plus, there is the consistency element in the equation News at 6pm then ACA at 7pm. Im just waiting for Nine to introduce a Sunday night edition of ACA to bring it in line with the rest of the week

Nine NBN News is even more “clunky” than NBN News, its a bit like The National Today Show (Today as we now know it) or its predecessor National Nine News Today. Too much of a mouthful, keep it simple

There is nothing wrong with the name NBN News. Just because you see Nine mike flags and other graphics on screen means nothing to the average viewer. People in Newcastle have been seeing something similar ever since aggregation and probably before that which may have been even worse as NBN may have sourced their national news not just from Channel Nine from other sources as well.

This issue seems to come up every couple of months by people who live in the city who have limited exposure to regional news operations. It’s a non issue. I spent many years living in regional NSW and watched many news services on free to air so I know what I am talking about. If they removed the NBN brand entiretly that would be a massive issue.

You realise I live in Newcastle?

I did not say they should remove it entirely.

The thing with mic flags is ironic, because NBN News started using them before aggregation, but Nine didn’t start using them until 2000s. But now there more Nine News logos (and ingrained references like “Nine News can reveal”) appearing in the bulletin than what NBN News logos etc do. 70% of the bulletin is a straight rip and read of the network feed.

And if you are saying logos mean nothing… that sounds a bit contradicatory.

I also live in the hunter region AND what i was saying is I think that if you make a program name short and simple.

I believe I’m uniquely qualified to discuss this as I worked for KO when it became MMM in 2017 in Newcastle and was privy to issues arising from such.

What issues? There were none.

Sure, there were old curmudgeons and the usual complaints from people on forums etc, but for the silent majority of listeners, as long as Tanya and Steve were there, plus JR and the local football team, no one cared

Keep the people that viewers/listeners know and love and you’ll have no issues.

Nine News Northern NSW would be a fine name. Just as Seven News North and Seven News New England are fine names. I can’t remember seeing Beryl from Barraba or Norm from Nambucca Heads complaining when Prime Local News became Seven News.

You’ll always have people calling it “Channel 3” and “NBN” but the simple fact remains, the Nine News BRAND would benefit as a whole from having the #1 local news in the fifth largest market in the country named after it.
