NBN News (2015-Feb 2025)

Given that the bulletins are about 75% Nine News content, it probably should be called “9NBN News Newcastle” and “9NBN News Northern Rivers” anyway.

That’s what I thought but there is lots other content in the news section that doesn’t have 9News. I just think it’s someone in Sydney that doesn’t understand the branding.

And it’s so inconsistently done throughout the bulletin.

Like when Gav or Tash will say in the report intro that “NBN News can reveal” but during the report, the journo will say “9 News can reveal”.

And their mic flag will have the “9 News” logo and the sign off will (sometimes) be eg. "Damian Ryan, NBN News;. But only sometimes, as sometimes there will be no end tag at all.

At least now the “EXCLUSIVE” bugs in the corner are no longer branded because that was an even bigger mess, as there were three different ones in use (Nine, NBN and NBN News).

Which is why I’ve always thought they need to co-brand the bulletin, eg 9NBN News so the two brands don’t appear to clash so much.

And please get rid of those pre-recorded “NBN News” reporter end tags. It is so dumb.

But people already know that NBN mic flags mean local reporters and know what NBN is on the 9 network.

The heritage brand is NBN News, no need to add extra complications to it.

That’s just like changing “Today Early News” to “9News Today Early News”

Just adding junk to a name for no reason

They could always co-brand the reporter end tags as “9NBN News” regardless of what happens to the bulletin name, similar to “Nightly News 7 Tasmania” being the bulletin name but the end tags are “7 Tasmania News”.

Then it doesn’t matter as much when NBN uses metro reports with “9News” tags, or v.v.

People know NBN is associated with Nine and this arrangement has been in place since the early to mid 90s since aggregation hit Newcastle and further north. They don’t need to make any brand changes at all and don’t give them ideas.

Here is a non-blurred version of NBN’s new live camera.

It looks like it’s mounted on the Port of Newcastle’s foghorn tower located on Menkens Lane directly behind Tower Cinemas, either that, or somewhere very close because the bottom of the image shows the corner of Darby Street and Hunter Street.

For those located out of the NBN viewing area. Gavin Morris does a network-wide weather update each afternoon when 9News Sydney throws to a break.

They also do “local” updates for each market and a network-wide “coming up at six” update.

It’s interesting that those updates are making it through to 9Now.

Previously, even the Sydney afternoon news updates would get swapped out with an ad. Not sure if that is an IP address thing ie. If Sydney 9Now viewers get them only because they’re in Sydney.

The app is based on your GPS location so it’s accurate.

If you are using a desktop/laptop and that device can’t get GPS location it will go by the postcode on your profile… IP address location is only a last resort but that usually sends you to a captial city stream unless you are using a tiny ISP whose IP addresses are actually geolocated to the correct area.

9Now has been doing pretty well in letting local content through like NBN news updates, big dog, local ads… but they still need to fine tune it.

The national ads play as they go to the break, and the stream overrides them with “personalised ads” but halfway through the commercial break the app returns you back to the live stream for local ads, but it hasn’t been working 100%… like yesterday it returned you back to a Newcastle Permanent ad halfway through.

Again on nights at about 7:30 or 8:00 when a show goes to a break

@Petarkco where abouts in the console do I do this?

You don’t need to use the console, just log onto the 9Now website. Deny location services popup and set a postcode in preferences.

Looks like this is the camera for the NBN News background. It’s on the old Port of Newcastle Fog Horn tower directly behind Tower Cinemas in Newcastle.

The camera is a Bolin EXU230H Full HD 30X Zoom Fast HEVC Outdoor PTZ Camera which is about $11,000 AUD. There are no point to point links so it’s either being transmitted over cellular or fibre.

Being PTZ they could pan it around to see Nobbys etc. I guess if you integrated it, you could get it to pan to a different view during the news (may this happens now)

I think someone at Nine needs to train the NBN News team on how to encode videos properly.

The video is at 720p resolution but very blurry on a 1080p computer screen. It should be uploaded at at 1080p at least 10mbps or more so it looks respectable when the video is transcoded into the different resolutions.

Also Nine sent a reporter to Newcastle for the same story (compare video quality difference)

NBN Management must be reading these forums… a day later they improved the Facebook video bitrates, see below.

I’m still of the opinion they should be uploaded at 20+ mbps at 1080p so we actually look metro, not just a regional backwater. But any improvement is good.

It’s raining in the second image, thats why the background is blurry.
