A random idea I thought of tonight.

Could Better Homes and Gardens work as a 30-minute Monday to Friday show at 7pm in a boost to lift Seven’s 7pm ratings leading into their reality programs?

I imagine Better Homes and Gardens has a similar-ish demo to Home and Away?

BH & G was originally a 30 min show airing on Tuesday nights so it could work.

Home and away is quite important to seven and their drama quotas though.

Not really. Home and Away still skews younger than Better Homes. It’s doing well in its current slot so there’s no reason to move it. Home and Away on the other hand, probably either needs to evolve a bit more or it just won’t survive the 7pm slot much longer.

I think people are harsh on home and away. It’s a consistent performer, competitive in its slot in total and demos. It also adds an extra 100k in online viewers an extra 50k or so in 30 day consolidated. I think it does ok for the slot when comparing others to its slot and provides a point of difference to the other networks.

Nobody wants to see BH&G on 5 days a week. It would kill the program since it’s very narrow in terms of content. (Not everyone likes gardening, and not everyone wants to see it before a reality program).

Channel Seven 2022

I have come to the opinion that networks really should be focusing on 6pm-12am because that’s where the shares comes from. So, here is how I would schedule Seven during that period of time in 2022. I have scrapped all reality (because let’s face it, Nine and Ten are the dominant players in reality formats), and have a renewed push on Australian made drama, game shows, news, sport and entertainment, all stuff that Seven does well. The whole idea of this programming is to retain the audience throughout the night, hence The Latest finishing off the schedule, as studies show that viewers see the late news as a sign for bed.

Meanwhile at other timeslots throughout the day, a greater reliance would be made of 7TWO, with the channel going HD, and The Morning Show, Seven Morning News, The Chase UK and Home and Away all shifting to 72, remaining in their current timeslots.

Lead-ins to the 6pm news are always very important. The Chase Australia remains there Monday to Friday at 5pm, with each state receiving their own weekender (i.e. Sydney Weekender, Melbourne Weekender etc.) on Saturdays and Sundays at 5:30pm.

Idea is nice but WAY TOO EXPENSIVE for Seven to invest in. They’re not bold enough to try something like that and whilst the likes of DWTS, Big Brother, Farmer Wants a Wife and SAS performs well they won’t leave reality.

Plus I don’t see why Seven can’t establish themselves as a dominant player in reality if they continue to pursue established formats (new or rebooted) to success.

That’s a fair point. Though I do think there is a market for drama, and let’s not forget that given everyone has been home so much over the last year or so, consumption of drama has increased, whilst there have been media reports recently of waning interest in reality television.

If I was in charge of Seven and was seriously pursuing the idea of introducing Australian made drama and struggling to make the costs, I would seriously consider axing The Morning Show, Seven Morning News and Weekend Sunrise (only Sunrise should be protected) if it meant we could get over the line with the costs. At the end of the day, the three programs I proposed to get the chop all air in the morning and are irrelevant to network shares.

All of those shows rate well and (I presume) aren’t that expensive for Seven to produce though?

& you would assume are making a profit.

For Seven, Id have a weekly Drama on the Tuesday 8.30pm timeslot for Seven. Worked for many years with All Saints, Packed to the Rafters, Winners & Losers and 800 Words. Yes, weekly Australian drama has been on a decline, which is a shame. But there should be one drama a week for most of the ratings season.

Sunday night dramas should be for mini-series/tele-movies/very short run series

Somewhat mock / Somewhat fantasy.

Legit tho I think this could work (of course no NRL). The Football Project would run from 6 until 7, being a AFL360/On the Couch/Thursday Night Sports Show/The Project/Talking Footy hybrid. Then at 7 the match of the round would start, with a 7:15 kickoff (15 minute pre-game).
