Metro Radio Ratings: Survey 2, 2018

KIIS 1065 will be glad they’re Sydney’s #1 FM station again and had a very healthy increase at breakfast. But as per usual, it’ll be interesting to see what happens over coming surveys.

If 2DayFM’s new music format continues to gain traction with Sydney, I can see the station eventually outrating Nova. Aside from a slight increase breakfast (an area I’d expect 2DayFM to remain behind the established programs in for most of the year), it was not a particularly good survey for 96.9!

Not much to say on the AM side of things (2GB is #1 as usual and ABC Sydney is doing OK - that’s about it), the next survey will probably be the one to watch for Macquarie Sports Radio and 2CH.

Having just looked at the Brisbane DAB+ ratings more closely, Smooth has a higher cume than Talking Lifestyle (formerly 4BH/Magic 882) in the overall ratings, as well as in the 25-64 demographic.

It’s a similar story in Melbourne, where Easy Hits has a higher cume than Talking Lifestyle (formerly Magic 1278) in the overall ratings.

Yes imagine how well 4BH could be doing right now with a Smooth format and the benefit of both the AM and DAB signal.

Yeah I don’t know how anyone can listen to Nova anymore with that repetitive playlist. They need to get back to basics and start to “sound different” again.

I reckon the new music format on 2day is a winner. If you look overseas particularly at North America and this format is winning in a number of big markets there. I even read an article about it recently saying it’s the “new top 40”, meaning this format is starting to beat traditional CHR stations.

I never listen to Nova anymore. Now I flick between FOX FM and KIIS 1011 due to the range of music they plan and the presenters.

Back in the day it was the only ever station that I used to listen to with Hughesy & Kate, etc.

Amazed to see Will & Woody as the #1 FM Drive show in Sydney and Adelaide.

Mainly due to very strong breakfast shows leading into drive, but let’s be honest Will and Woody aren’t a great drive show. I believe they would be better with a woman in the show.

Can someone please tell me how Kate Tim and Marty can still claim themselves as Australia’s #1 Drive Show when they are only #1 Drive in Brisbane??

Most listeners Australia-wide? Biggest overall audience?

Based on total cume probably. Nova 96.9 has a massive cume compared to its average share.

What prize from the prize cupboard would you like? If it was AW, Bertocchi Ham and voucher to the Pancake Palace for you.

Is it the lowest in recorded history? Would love to know the next lowest from the ‘survey archivist’, @HUFF and others.

Yes, it sure could be 4BH and still could.

Smooth on AM, if it wasn’t the visionless Lachie owning Nova, an innovative operator would push the digital aspect, flood the market with digital radios.

This was disastrous and was not backed up by any great coverage by the sports callers, failed to interest any more than die hard followers.

612 have a huge problem with their bfast content, it’s down the gurgler to the 4BC standard (or lack thereof) in its final years, no innovation as with Ross and John (Davie and Miller) or Spencer’s quirky content. Lazy grab of Facebook trending stories and the rubbish in the paid daily newspaper. No brain of their own and it shows. Also wouldn’t help to have an ex 4BC producer running the show at 612 bfast who was there for 4BC’s final descent.

And no improvement on bfast despite being at the GC casino the whole games. No interesting use of comm games content, very little used, Jay Walkerden didn’t use the money wisely, he didn’t need to pay for the rights unless they were handed to them very cheaply as I suspect.

Most in Bris or GC couldn’t care less, the games were largely and intrusion in their lives, the lack of people on the Gold Coast said it all. That’s all before the over 120 000 unsold tickets, it failed to spark fervent interest.

You can search the methodology online - basically each survey period they survey half the sample and average that with the previous survey period half-sample to get the current surveys results. For Survey 2, the results of the 5-week Survey 2 period is averaged with the second half (3 weeks) of survey 1.

Even if you say active Comm Games coverage took up 2 weeks of survey 2, it would have to have made an insane difference to have too much effect on the overall result.

If they’re getting the numbers, then it doesn’t really matter, does it?

Personally, I never thought Hamish & Andy we’re particulrly great but obviously a lot of people love/loved them - and they got the numbers, so does that mean I’m wrong?

Lots of people listening for not very long…

I believe @TV-Expert commented that TalkLife did score lower last year with a 0.3 in Survey 7. That was the lowest ever recorded in Brisbane (and one of the lowest ever in any of the five metros.)

When I have a look at the ratings, I always like to compare the same surveys in the previous year - that way seasonal factors like the start of the footy season can be ignored. So below is an analysis comparing surveys 1 and 2 for Melbourne breakfast from 2018 to 2017 and of course some attempts at analysis.

image

CrocMedia - happy, not ecstatic. A good lift, indicating the new AFL centric line up seems to be working. If the audience is growing and happy then less temptation for them to try MSR.

Macquarie - 3AW continues to rule the roost. The collapse in TLS1278 was really due to 1-2017 having the last vestiges of the Magic1278 audience.

SCA - Awesome re-build job of Fox. Triple M has warning signs - is the SEN gain from Triple M? Has the audience tried Will Anderson and decided he is not as good as Mick Molloy?

ARN - IMHO the work done by Jo & Lehmmo is starting to fade for Gold (or should that be fade to grey…ok bad music reference). It will be interesting to see the impact of Christian O’Connell, when he clears customs. Hopefully the audience warm to him better than his countryman at Nova. As for Kiis, not a successful change to Jase & PJ, although I think the whole station needs to be overhauled/relaunched.

Nova Entertainment - Chrissie. Sam & Browny have done a good job at building their audience and I think it works. Smooth with limited competition is sailing along and seemingly at the expense of ABC774.

ABC - the switch to a commercial style breakfast offering has resulted in a not unexpected decline for ABC774. It looks (and sounds) like a brain fade to me. Increases in NewsRadio and Other are not unexpected outcomes. Triple J has always fluctuated in Melbourne with an audience increase from KIIS. Similar for ABC FM, although hard to determine where that audience moves to - RadioNational, NewsRadio and Other (3MBS) I presume.

Very interesting analysis. Thanks Rob!

Inspired by the above post, here’s one for Sydney:
SydneyBreakfastRatings_2017-18

EON - 2CH is fairly steady from last year (just after EON acquired the station) under the helm of Gareth McCray, soon to be replaced by Trevor Sinclair & Indira Naidoo.

Macquarie - 2GB’s Alan Jones rose a bit, whilst TLS954, under the helm of John Stanley & Garry Linnell, fell.

Sky Sports - Steady.

SCA - 2Day breakfast didn’t move much despite a change in breakfast team, but the station lifted overall thanks to a music format change that happened at the beginning of this year. Triple M’s Grill Team fell a bit from last year.

ARN - Kyle & Jackie O on KIIS continues to rule the FM airwaves, whilst Jonesy & Amanda on WS bounced back from this time last year.

Nova Entertainment - Nova’s Fitzy & Wippa fell, whilst Smooth is fairly steady.

ABC - The change in breakfast for ABC Radio Sydney from a one person to a duo (Robbie Buck & Wendy Harmer) has seen their ratings having a slight decline from last year, which is better than what happened in Melbourne. All other ABC stations, except ABC Classic FM, fell.

I think KIIS’ biggest issue is its other dayparts. A woeful 4.3 in mornings, and haemorrhaging listeners with a pissweak nights lineup that finishes at 10pm

To be fair, the drop in listenership across nights is reflective of its competition as well.

KIIS’ 7.8 in drive drops to a 5.8 at nights. Meanwhile, Fox’s 13.4 in drive drops to a 7.7 in nights - personally, I would’ve thought a nearly 6-point drop would be much more characteristic of a ‘haemorrhage’ of listeners than a 2-point drop.

Nova drops from a 9.3 in drive to a 7.2. Triple M drops from a 7.4 to a 4.8.

I’d suggest nights numbers are more indicative of audience behaviour than any particular offering. 3AW gets a nice 5-point boost from drive to nights, but it’s perhaps naive to suggest everyone’s simply moving from the FM’s to 3AW at night time (though it’s possible that some/many are).

Whilst the majority of other stations have remained somewhat consistent and therefore are easily able to be compared year on year, I don’t know that KIIS is in the same boat. I’d be more inclined to look at KIIS survey 1 & 2 results in comparison to survey 1 & 2 of Matt & Jane and survey 1 & 2 of Matt & Meshel, though I take your overall point.

As for overhauling and relaunching, isn’t that what they did in 2018…? From my listening the station certainly sounds much more like a proper ‘for a younger demo’ station, rather than simply Mix with a name change (which is what it sounded like from the launch of KIIS to end of 2017). It still appears to skew older, there’s a lot more older tracks than it’s mqin competition, but it’s still much more aimed at a younger demographic I would’ve thought.

Agree

Yes but there also a difference between a power house show like Hamish and Andy that was entertaining and humorous to a Hamish and Andy wanna be Show with too many fake laughs and inexperienced producers that the smart radio listeners of Melbourne Perth and Brisbane know Will and Woody are a turn off where as in Sydney and Adelaide you have dumb listeners who only listen to the Drive show because of their stations strong breakky shows
