Jack Irish (Guy Pearce) is back next month in an expanded six-part series that takes us from Fitzroy to Manila in the Philippines, where Jack’s on-again-off-again lover Linda Hillier (Marta Dusseldorp) is now a foreign correspondent for an Australian newspaper.

As Jack and Linda say their final goodbye, it is clear that he has learned little about life, love or women. In the wake of Linda’s departure, Jack continues his important business on home soil – collecting debts, sanding cabinets, and seeing a man about a racehorse. But his fear of commitment is about to be well and truly tested by the arrival of Sarah Longmore (Claudia Karvan).

Seemingly out of the blue, Jack is engaged to track down a missing man, Wayne Dilthey (Dan Hamill). The investigation goes pear-shaped when his quarry is killed before his eyes. The client becomes an enigma and the job is revealed to be an elaborate set up – one that now has Jack prime suspect for murder. Even his alibi is false – the alluring but unnerving metal sculptor, Sarah Longmore, claims to have been with Jack at the time. If all this isn’t disturbing enough, the only witness to the crime has taken off in his beloved Studebaker.

Meanwhile, in Manila, Linda’s journalistic instincts tell her she is on the trail of something big. But when the beginnings of her expose are quickly quashed, the opportunity of a lifetime begins to look like a dead end job – until a mysterious meeting with a criminal in hiding. But all is not what it seems…

Good to see that the ABC have gone back to having their quality dramas on Thursday night and Friday night.

I wish SBS hadn’t put The Family Law in the same slot, considering there are so many other nights available for scripted Aussie drama/comedy, so they wouldn’t clash with Jack Irish on the ABC.

@JBar quality australian drama should do very well on Thursday and Friday nights.

Yeah but for a while there they kept trying to put their dramas on Sunday nights with less success. They did it with the third season of Rake which ended with lower ratings than previous seasons and the second season of Time of our Lives which led to it getting axed.

Let’s hope they stick with Thursday 8.30pm this year and follow Jack Irish with Janet King, Barracuda, The Code, Glitch etc…

ABC is pleased to announce that filming is underway on Jack Irish series 2 in Melbourne.

Emmy Award-winner Guy Pearce reprises his iconic role as Jack Irish, former criminal lawyer, and part-time debt collector, with a penchant for getting wrapped up in things he shouldn’t.

Returning to Jack’s world are Marta Dusseldorp as journalist Linda Hillier, Roy Billing as horse racing identity Harry Strang, Aaron Pedersen as Harry’s trusted off-sider Cam Delray, Shane Jacobson as old-school detective Barry Tregear, Kate Atkinson as IT-guru Simone, Damien Richardson as Jack’s former legal partner Drew, Damien Garvey as Stan, the Prince of Prussia publican, and the inimitable Fitzroy Youth Club, Terry Norris and John Flaus.

The series has an all-star line-up of guests including Danielle Cormack (Rake, Wentworth), Tiarnie Coupland (Sunshine, Love Child), Jacek Koman (Jack Irish series 1, Seven Types of Ambiguity), Leah Vandenberg (The Letdown, Sunshine) and Tom Gleeson (Hard Quiz, The Weekly with Charlie Pickering).

The bluebird of happiness has stopped warbling and Jack’s life has hit a new low. His body broken from too many beatings, Linda has left him, the racing world is in turmoil, his local, the Prince of Prussia may never be the same again and Jack has returned to the law in the form of mundane conveyancing.

That is, until he learns of foreign students at a disreputable private college dying in bizarre circumstances. His investigation leads him down a rabbit hole – and Linda to India – to unveil a corrupt and complicit government in bed with a homegrown global enterprise engaged in the literal pursuit of happiness and its very lucrative benefits.

The six-part series is by once again written by 2017 Australian Writers’ Guild (AWGIE) Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Andrew Knight (Ali’s Wedding, Hacksaw Ridge, Rake), Matt Cameron (Sunshine, Secret City, Molly) and Andrew Anastasios (The Water Diviner, Wentworth) with Elise McCredie (Sunshine, Nowhere Boys) joining the team.

Series directors are Mark Joffe (Jack Irish series 1, The House of Hancock), Kriv Stenders (Red Dog, The Principal) and Fiona Banks (Wentworth, Mustangs).

Inspired by the Jack Irish novels by the late Peter Temple, the first two Jack Irish telemovies Bad Debts and Black Tide were broadcast on ABC in 2012 followed by the final in the trilogy, Dead Point , in 2014. The first Jack Irish series of six episodes screened in 2016. The second series was broadcast in 2018.

The series will air on ABC and ABC iview in 2021.

Worth noting there are only 4 episodes in this season.

Can’t say i’m a big fan of putting all episodes on catch up after the first.
I’d rather they play them out each week the traditional way.

Great ending to the series. This season started a bit slow but what a great ending.
