HBO Max

Depends on how ‘deep’ the Max library is/will be. Foxtel may add Max to IQ boxes like Disney and Paramount to avoid content leaving the platform altogether.

Hard to tell without any specifics on the deal they have with Foxtel. They’d most likely lose most of the new content coming out after an Aussie Max launch.
Stans deal with Showtime meant they got to keep the rights to all the shows that premiered on Stan during the deal, if Foxtel’s is the same then the blow to their catalogue would be significantly less than if they were to lose all the content.
It also depends on the approach that WBD takes to licensing content to third parties. We’ve seen Paramount be pretty open with it, while Disney was very keen to keep all their content to their own platforms (but they’re now slowly opening back up to it).
Content deals are extremely difficult, especially when you don’t know the specifics. Nobody here could say what they will lose without it actually happening.

Warner Bros. Discovery plans to unveil a 24/7 live-streamed news service called “CNN Max” on September 27, and indicated the outlet would focus initially on breaking news.

This isn’t that surprising - Foxtel even hinted that it might happen when they announced their latest HBO deal.

Maybe Binge needs to align itself with one of the streaming giants like Max. Then they could also make their Australian content available worldwide.

This is fantastic news for movie lovers because like Disney and Fox films to Disney Plus, it means Warner Bros films will go straight to Max weeks after theatrical release like they do in the US rather than having to buy or rent them from iTunes etc.

This is good news for people who hate foxtel and the less reliance on that platform. MAX will be an international brand and fox/binge cannot compete with that. We need a further dilutation of foxtel’s hold on subscirption in Australia. The damage News Corp has done is immeasureable.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Foxtel somehow gets an integration deal with a local Max service. Helps both companies (for foxtel to remain somewhat relevant, and for Max to access an existing database of customers). Would make the transition a lot smoother.

Now all we need is Discovery+

We still need Peacock too then we are complete.

You want one service with absolutely everything? Never going to happen.

I don’t think we will get this now. But 7plus has the Peacock deal anyway which is just as good.

Not for new release movies it isn’t.

It’s a delicate balance - multiple services offer choice, but too many ends up putting pressure on all of them. Services such as Binge are the first in the crosshairs as they are pretty well an aggregator of content but it will start to hurt others before long - Stan saw the writing on the wall and diversified.

Digital Piracy is on the rise again - thanks in part to this fragmentation (and other factors).

Well a service per studio is certainly not the answer. HBO/Warner or whatever they are called now are already licensing content back to Netflix US recently.

I’d question the value of MAX launching locally at this stage to be honest.

Didn’t they get $500 mil for a 2 year contract with Foxtel? Given Binge has what 1.4 million subs even if Max could replicate that subscriber base seems like it’s a long road to achieving profitability.
