Goolagong

ABC Showcase 2026

SYNOPSIS

Goolagong is a three-part event mini-series based on the inspiring true-life story of world champion tennis player Evonne Goolagong, one of Australia’s most loved female sporting heroes.

In 1958 a skinny Aboriginal seven-year-old peered through the wire fence of the Barellan tennis courts, longing to play the sport she instinctively knew was her game. That longing would drive her to become the world’s number one female tennis player, and one of the Australia’s most loved sportswomen, winning 14 Grand Slam titles including Wimbledon twice, and overcoming harassment from her coach, recovery from career ending injury to defeat her great rival and be the world number one. She remains the only mother of the modern era to have won Wimbledon. In the time of burgeoning black rights and women’s lib, Evonne proved to herself, her people, and the world that she was a true champion.
