From The Lounge Room - New Archival Project

Do you have a preferred format/resolution/bitrate?

MP4, MOV, or MKV is preferred, although not a dealbreaker. As long as it plays, it’s fine.

other than that, I’m not too fussed about bitrate or resolution. Whatever you’ve got is appreciated!

Hi all,

just a quick one as submissions continue to come in (btw a HUGE thank you for those who submitted! :slightly_smiling_face:)

Just a friendly reminder that the site focused on original recordings - ideally digitised from VHS, Beta, or direct TV captures.

Screen recordings (e.g. camera footage of a TV or monitor - especially if it’s from YouTube or other platforms) won’t be included. This is purely to maintain the quality and integrity of the archive, and to make sure archivists get the proper credit they deserve.

I’ll have updated the submission guidelines to make this clearer too - but figured it was worth mentioning here as we get more submissions.

Appreciate everyone’s support so far, thank you all! :slightly_smiling_face:

hey all, apologies for the radio silence on my end! June has been a pretty busy month for me!

I am gonna get stuck in and do more work on the site soon, and hopefully by early July - launching!

Stay tuned, and thanks for the support!

All good mate - I’m sure everyone here is grateful for you taking the time when you can to get it up and running. Hopefully the launch goes smoothly once you get to that point.

Hey everyone,

just a quick one to say the site is now officially open for browsing.

A huge thank you to everyone who has submitted clips, I’ve approved and curated the majority and will be working through the remaining backlog of clips as soon as I can. Thank you for making this more than just a personal project. You made it real.

While this is the launch, I still want to iron out the last few bits and pieces but I figured it’s worthwhile launching, just to see where to improve from here, BUT feel free to dive in, explore what’s already live, and of course, keep sending things through.

Appreciate all the support so far.

Congratulations! You definitely must be doing something right here! So far I’m really enjoying the site! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses::+1:

It’s disappointing that a lot of interesting TV promos, news, IDs and PSAs are being taken away from us because archivists are having their YouTube channels terminated. I’m very confident this site will fix that issue.

C’mon everyone, time to get more vids submitted! Let’s keep TV history alive for the future!

Cool site - is there no 10 clips up yet? Can’t access that page via menu

Amazing that it’s taken so long for us to have a british-style presentation site. Great job by all involved.

Looking great. Excellent job.

I’ve submitted a couple of old clips tonight - 0-28 ident 1984, Live Eye TVQ 0 1978 and a 10 promo .

Wondering is ā€œaspect ratioā€ might also be a criteria to add at some point.

Love the logo!!

You’ve probably said in the past but i’ve forgotten, is this a WordPress website or different platform?

Also the menu isn’t working on mobile. (well on my iPhone)

At least this site will hopefully stop your videos from being wiped forever. The very videos YouTube erased from their platform to protect their so-called MrBeast/Cocomelon/Cat Video community.

All your archival stuff (and even modern content) should go on a site where it’ll be safe and available for the future. Now you have the platform to preserve your videos aka TV history that you’ve collected over the years.

Screw YouTube for TV archiving. From The Lounge Room is the place to preserve your content. I’ll still be on Odysee uploading there of course.

Michael, this is brilliant. Can’t wait to see where this goes over the coming weeks and months. But there’s some great stuff up there already! Kudos to you and all involved.

thanks so much for the kind words, all!

Thanks! I’ll go through them tonight, and I will consider adding aspect ratio as a part of the criteria

Yeah, it’s WordPress, as that’s the platform I’m most familiar with, but it’s hosted through Dreamhost (with a Backblaze CDN for the videos), and not WP directly.

I’ll get that fixed tonight when I get home from work, thanks for letting me know.

Congrats @MichaelPower on getting the website up and running! I personally think the layout looks great and I love the whole idea of having a website dedicated to archiving media recordings. I definitely appreciate the amount of time and effort you would have put into creating it, so thank you for making it become a reality!

I’m prepared to submit my own recordings onto the website. The main two reasons as for why I haven’t yet is because the majority of my videos have my channel watermark in the top-right hand corner. Also, I render most of my videos into WMV files, so I will need to re-render all of my recordings and convert them to the MP4 format.

If you don’t mind me asking, have you considered possibly having a category dedicated to radio recordings? I have hundreds of radio airchecks which I have recorded over the years and I would love to be able to submit those recordings as well, especially seeing as how YouTube can be fickle when it comes to uploading popular songs.

I’ve had several of my radio aircheck videos blocked over time as the songs in the aircheck can become copyright restricted. I’ve uploaded many of these airchecks onto my channel as WMV videos, but if you did decide to have a category dedicated to radio recordings, I would also be prepared to submit the original MP3 files if it was any easier?

I’ve also got a few other ideas/suggestions for From The Lounge Room, but I don’t want to bombard you with them and I think it’s great what you’ve done with the site already!

Can we also page The Radio Vault from NZ who could perhaps benefit from having their Aussie radio recordings (especially those in C-QUAM AM Stereo) preserved?

Losing TRV was a great loss to those interested in various aspects of radio, and radio history as a whole, its legacy so far only surviving in the hands of the people who may have downloaded some of their clips from their YouTube channel when it was active.

hi all,

i’ve put some new clips on the site - particularly some from @TV.Cynic!

Fair enough - I’d be more than happy to see you contribute when you’re ready! There is no rush at all, take whatever time you need to prep the files. Watermarks aren’t a big issue, and WMV conversions are very welcome once you’ve had a chance to sort through them.

I wouldn’t mind adding a section decicated to archiving radio in the near future - we honestly have such a unique market, and to see some of that get archived would be the next step forward. You’re right that YouTube isn’t the most forgiving with music-heavy content, and having a home for those clips outside of Google’s control is something I’ve will be keen to support.

Also, please don’t hesitate to bombard away - I am open to hearing ideas!

Not a bad idea at all, TRV was a great archive - and earned brownie points from me when they put up the Nova 96.9 launch, and some 2DayFM material from the time.

Don’t forget the clip as well from when Australia’s first commercial FM radio station was launched, 92.3 EON FM, back in 1980. That launch clip is now non-existant, and is considered lost to time, all because TRV shut their archive down.

Someone ripping and re-uploading their content across YouTube really shouldn’t have been cited as a reason to shut the entire vault down. They should’ve just soldiered on with uploading their radio content, their archive was huge. Heck, they could’ve even joined MediaSpy. All radio history from Down Under needs to be preserved now and well into the future.
