Foxtel

No, they spent $3 billion to “invest” in sporting rights, and they’ve already signalled buyer’s remorse several times since by complaining about the terms of those very rights agreements.

The DAZN model is just so innovative, though. Who knew that constant 24/7 rotations of sitcom reruns, dramas and Taskmaster would be something Foxtel subscribers desperately needed? Not to mention those “More” channels, which really do scream, “We can’t be bothered programming a channel ourselves, so here are our entire content libraries repackaged in trendy bundles.”

Who needed CBeebies, PBS Kids or Cartoon Network anyway when you can continue paying transmission fees for the DreamWorks Channel or, as I affectionately call it, The Netflix Failure Vault.

If they’re not spending much on it and making more money than they’re losing from fairly sticky customers, there isn’t really much reason to shut it down.

Now putting more investment into the service is another matter.

i can see them doing this in 2030 when the satellite agreement with optus ends - i can see them closing fox and moving to kayo only with binge being sold off

When DAZN still has over a million Foxtel customers paying an average ARPU of $89 a month. They are not shutting it down.

Not to mention all of the commercial customers (sports venues/hospitality/accommodation etc).

It’s started to feel like every venue I walk into is (improperly) using Kayo these days. One pub near me just has the Kayo app on all the TVs.

So is it actually every venue or just one pub near you? I’d be surprised if this was widespread.

They don’t ned to close down completely. they could keep Foxtel running but make it internet only.

I’d say most of the pubs I’ve been to recently if they have Foxtel are using Kayo. This one is just very noticeable because they let it sit on the menu screen for ages.

I noticed a while ago, my gym no longer uses Foxtel. They"ve switched all their screens to FTA now. ABC,7,9,10, ABC news, 10 Comedy, SBS, SBS2.

Binge is still a decent product. Just need to make the tv channels more front and centre.

The problem is that the company running Binge is fundamentally a sports business, meaning that outside of Kayo, they’re unlikely to care about the broader entities in the same way Nine, WBD, Paramount, or literally any other media organisation would have if they had acquired Foxtel.

Foxtel And Netflix Extend Partnership, Keeping The World’s Best Entertainment In One Place

Foxtel and Netflix have renewed their long-standing partnership in a multi-year deal. Under the agreement, Platinum Plus Foxtel iQ customers will continue to enjoy Netflix as part of their Foxtel subscription, with Netflix content also seamlessly integrated throughout the Foxtel iQ experience.

Foxtel Group’s Executive Director – Content & Commercial Partnerships Stephanie Quinn said: “Netflix remains one of the world’s leading streaming services and as DAZN continues to aggregate the best entertainment brands for Australian audiences, they remain a key strategic partner.

“Netflix was the foundation app included on Foxtel’s iQ platform when we revolutionised the Foxtel experience in 2019 and has been a key part of that experience ever since. Customer engagement with Netflix has been strong showing the value of having Netflix seamlessly integrated into Foxtel. Together, we’ve helped shape the way Australians access and enjoy their favourite entertainment shows and movies.”

The partnership reinforces Foxtel iQ as the only place in Australia where audiences can access blockbuster hits from both platforms in a single destination. This includes Netflix favourites like Stranger Things, Bridgerton and Squid Game alongside Foxtel’s acclaimed local and global hits and Originals like Colin From Accounts, The Five Star Weekend and The Other Bennet Sister making it easier than ever to discover and enjoy great entertainment.

Netflix Director, Business Development - Rest of Asia (ANZ, Greater China, and SEA), Allen Pan said: “Netflix’s partnership with Foxtel has always been about making it as easy as possible for Australians to find the local and international films and TV shows they love, in one place. We’re proud to extend this partnership and keep bringing the world’s best entertainment to Australian screens.”

Foxtel Managing Director Steve O’Connor said: “This extension builds on DAZN and Netflix’s shared ambition to give customers exceptional value, choice and convenience, with the world’s best entertainment available seamlessly in one place. By bringing together premium television, on-demand content and world-class streaming services, Foxtel continues to strengthen its position as Australia’s leading entertainment aggregator and make it easier for customers to find and enjoy the content they love.”

Didn’t Flash News close down early this year?

It did.

I received an email a couple days ago from Foxtel advising that an upcoming update is going to kill off support for the little puck-sized Foxtel Now boxes. I still have one, rarely used, connected to a TV for the rare occasion that someone wants to keep an eye on a sports event while doing something in that part of the house. It’s the only one which survived. I had two others over the years, one developed a fault where it would lock up at random, and the other arrived faulty, forever stuck in a reboot loop. I can understand why Foxtel want to finally kill them off.

It seems the Foxtel Go app will be renamed as the Foxtel app. There’s a long list of compatible devices in the FAQ but two stood out to me. Apple TV will be supported (FAQ says “coming soon”). I don’t know if the Foxtel Go app was ever available on Apple TV but I thought Binge and Kayo were, so it’s good to get them aligned. Also support is added for Firefox and Edge in addition to the existing support of Chrome and Safari.

Support will be dropped for iOS/iPadOS 14 and earlier, Android mobile devices on version 6 or earlier, and Android TVs running version 7 or earlier.

Didn’t they already do this a while ago now?

There is an existing Foxtel Now thread to discuss the end of those boxes.
