Four Corners

Matthew Carney has been executive producer of Four Corners since May 2022, and will stay on until a successor is appointed.

According to News Corp’s Annette Sharp:

On Thursday the ABC clarified that Fazal was recruited “by the EP of (Background Briefing and Four Corners) after the usual required reference checks”.

“The recruitment for Four Corners followed a standard and robust process, the job was advertised and there was an interview panel,” a spokeswoman clarified, responding to and correcting claims (ABC’s Head of Investigations and Current Affairs Jo) Puccini had brought the former sergeant-at-arms of outlaw bikie gang The Mongols into the news division fold.

ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks: Statement on Four Corners program 'Downfall – the Last Days of President Trump’

The Four Corners program ‘Downfall – the Last Days of President Trump’ examined the events of the 6 January 2021 Capitol riot in detail, including the role of President Donald Trump.

Comparing the BBC’s Panorama program to the ABC’s Four Corners program is opportunistic and false.

The BBC program spliced together two separate grabs from different sections of the speech President Donald Trump made during that day that occurred about 54 minutes apart, leading to criticism that the program was misleading.

The grab on Four Corners was used accurately by the program. The editing did not change the meaning of that section of the speech and did not mislead the audience. The program was consistent with the ABC’s high standards of factual, accurate and impartial storytelling.

The edited section of the grab is bracketed in bold:

“And Mike Pence is going to have to come through for us, and if he doesn’t, that will be a, a sad day for our country because you’re sworn to uphold our Constitution. Now, it is up to Congress to confront this egregious assault on our democracy. And after this, we’re going to walk down, and I’ll be there with you, [we’re going to walk down, we’re going to walk down. Anyone you want, but I think right here, we’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them.] Because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength and you have to be strong.”

The edit does not alter the factual meaning of the selected portion or misrepresent the speaker’s intent. The edited segment retains the essential factual elements of the speech, namely, the call for supporters to “walk down to the Capitol” and to “show strength.”

‘Downfall’ is powerful journalism of the highest standard. The ABC is proud of it.

ABC Showcase announced Four Corners returning with a new season in 2026.

Friendly Jordies lets rip on the ABC and the Fazal saga:

New Executive Producer of Four Corners

In Crooked , Four Corners included a remark from former NSW police officer and academic Dr Michael Kennedy which may have given the impression that Mark William Standen was not vetted when he was employed by the NSW Crime Commission in 1996. The then Commissioner of the Crime Commission, Phillip Bradley, has advised that Mr Standen was in fact vetted at the time of his employment, and that the Australian Federal Police and the National Crime Authority informed the Commission that nothing adverse was known about him. Four Corners regrets any harm caused to Mr Bradley and acknowledges that his response should have been included to make clear that vetting did take place.

The multi-award winning Four Corners returns for another year of powerhouse investigative journalism - fearless and forensic, holding power to account throughout six decades – and counting.

Australia’s longest running current affairs program has been exposing scandals, triggering inquiries, firing debate and confronting taboos for and behalf of the Australian public since 1961 and looks set to remain as defiant as ever in 2026.

The season will begin with a two part story looking back at last month’s Bondi Beach terror attacks.

Bondi: Light Over Darkness

Monday 2 February at 8:30pm

Four Corners returns in 2026 with the first of a powerful two-part special on the Bondi massacre.

In this episode, reporter Mark Willacy brings the definitive account of what happened on that December day, as told by the people who were there.

Survivors of the attack speak in detail about the moments that changed their lives forever.

Families of those killed share their grief, their anger, and pay tribute to their loved ones.

Together, their testimony builds the most complete picture yet of how the attack unfolded.

The program also examines how Australia is living with the scars of the massacre, and how this tragedy has shattered the nation’s sense of security.

Light Over Darkness is built on firsthand accounts and verified documentary evidence.

It examines Australia’s deadliest terror attack and asks what must now be done to prevent it happening again.

Bondi: Light Over Darkness is reported by Mark Willacy and produced by Lesley Robinson and Mary Fallon, it goes to air on Monday 2 February at 8.30pm on ABC TV and ABC iview. See more at abc.net.au/news and on ABC News social media platforms.

(Mark Willacy) and the Four Corners producers Lesley Robinson and Mary Fallon cancelled their vacation plans to begin work on pulling together a minute-by-minute account of how the tragedy unfolded at Bondi beach on the first day of Hanukah, using verified documentary evidence and first-hand accounts from victims’ families and witnesses.

Part two the following week will see the ABC’s terrorism specialist reporter, Sean Rubinsztein-Dunlop, examine the country’s national security failures and what can be done to prevent it happening again.

Did anyone watch tonight’s premiere? Was it a hard watch?

I saw somewhere today that they were premiering new title cards tonight.

Indeed - capped from News website.

More orchestral fanfare, though not sure about trading the window into the numeral with a lens flare as intro.
