Great to see Mick back to his roots

Penalties for the first time

Extra time

And another penalty shootout.

Feels like it would be such an easy win to put on extended highlights of the match from very early this morning during these long breaks between games.

I’m not fussed, On Demand is there of course, but still.

Mexico v Ecuador kickoff time (11am AEST) is postponed due to thunderstorms.

Another view of the Cup Fever Set during Tuesday’s Show (30th May). Mostly PTZ Cameras in use, as by the looks of it they can barely fit the 20 or so audience members in…

Craig Foster is currently with Stan Sport and his contract means he is absent from this year’s World Cup. A staple of SBS’s coverage from 2002-2022

SBS World Cup boom puts advertisers in the winner’s circle

SBS’s biggest World Cup advertisers are seeing first hand the benefits of their investment. Audience figures are ahead of internal expectations and the broadcaster tells Mumbrella’s James Manning it is confident it will deliver on every major sponsorship commitment.

Total SBS World Cup consumption so far sits at 118m hours with 53.8% being watched via SBS On Demand. Around 60% of that audience is aged 25-54.

I hope this is the last time SBS broadcast the World Cup and because a commercial network would do much better. You’d get the same number of ads but at least the video quality would be much better - both on the broadcast channel and on demand website.

If it was on Stan for example, you could pay to not have ads, watch it in better quality AND not listen to David Basheer spend most of the game moaning about the officiating.

The reality is none of the main FTA networks care for football in this country. They would all show the absolute bare minimum games of FTA and throw the rest behind the paywall. You might end up with a better technical quality, but the coverage itself would be far worse for it.

Like what SBS tried to do in 2018?

Stan Sport isn’t an ad-free service anymore.

You can pay to have it ad free according to their website.

The reality is the FIFA World Cup is a loss-maker for free-to-air commerical networks with matches in the early hours of the monring or during office hours

Please note what happened with the World Cup in 2018 when Optus had secured the exclusive digital rights then saw its servers crash and streams drop out from overwhelming traffic. Optus was forced to hand broadcasting duties back to its rival, SBS.

SBS gets another lot of (very unexpected) extra time this morning but no penalty shootout.

You’d quite likely get a lot more.
