Excellent Numbers for matches involving the Socceroos against Tunisia. The FIFA World Cup helped SBS lift its ratings to 4th place during the final week of the official ratings year.
As we get to the knockout match against Argentina, expect audience numbers to rise.

Round of 16

The Socceroos have set-up a mouth-watering round of 16 clash with the world’s third-ranked side Argentina on Sunday morning at 6am (AEDT), after the latter shored up top spot in Group C with a 2-0 victory over Poland in their final group match.

Despite the Argentines eventually steadying their shaky start to the tournament with convincing wins over both Mexico and Poland, their shock first round loss to Australia’s AFC affiliates Saudi Arabia proved that anything is possible when it comes to a World Cup.

However, it will take some doing for Australia to get past goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and a defence spearheaded by Nicolas Otamendi in the round of 16, while the Aussies in turn will need to be at their best defensively to combat the South Americans’ attacking exploits of a certain Lionel Messi, Angel di Maria and Julian Alvarez to name a few.

Having already gone further into the tournament than most would have expected, Australia will need to defy the odds yet again to eliminate one of the heavy favourites leading up to the tournament.

Not affiliates, maybe siblings, cousins, fellow AFC members.

Annoyingly all the Asian nations are in the same side of the bracket, so no AFC v AFC final ()

Yes great coverage. However, one aspect, that Australia is missing is native 4K broadcasts. These are available in other countries and for free. It should have been an option in 2022 in Australia as well.

Enjoying the good coverage of the FIFA World Cup on SBS - people can catch up the replays on SBS on Demand. As well, fans can watch some past archived FIFA World Cup matches on SBS. After Lucy Zelic left SBS, they managed to find good talent including Niav Owens, Sarah Walsh, Richard Bayliss.

If we are to enjoy the 2026 World Cup in 4K, then a streaming service is probably the best option, because a federal government trial and rollout will take several years (similar to the digital TV switchover).

SBS On Demand could have had a 4k option for the World Cup. BBC Player does (as it did in 2018).

Bit late with this which is from 29 Nov.

Statement concerning breach of the Code of Practice

Due to an error, SBS aired a 30 second gambling advertisement just before 7am on November 23 during the live broadcast of the Australia v France FIFA World Cup match, in breach of the SBS Code of Practice and relevant live sport gambling advertising regulations. The same error also caused a contravention in relation to a proportion of audience members receiving the live digital stream for that game.

Following the identification of this issue in relation to the Australia vs France match, further investigations were undertaken which identified three additional individual contraventions which had occurred for the broadcast of FIFA World Cup matches; one impacting a match in the AEST time zone and two instances impacting the NT market only.

These ad placements were the result of human error, due in part to the extraordinary demands faced by our SBS teams in delivering the FIFA World Cup to Australians. However, this does not excuse the breaches which were inconsistent with our commitment to our audiences.

We take compliance with our Code and other regulatory obligations very seriously. SBS apologises for these errors and has immediately implemented additional review processes and manual checks to reduce the risk of a similar breach happening again.

They’ll get away with it, but I can’t say that this reasoning offered as to why it occurred is really up to scratch. It’s time that regulators stopped issuing warnings and started fining broadcasters for these breaches.
