Emergency Radio Broadcasting in Australia

Assuming this is pre-empting cricket coverage on 774 AM?

Just tuned in to Richard Glover on ABC Sydney.

A lot of commercial stations through the south of NSW are taking 2GB’s bushfire coverage. Murray Wilton was on from 8am, John Stanley since midday, Luke Grant taking over at 4pm.

Hopefully this is the right topic.
Speaking of the Fires, they had to evacuate the 2ST/Power FM studios in Nowra so programming on that station is currently coming from the Bowral studios with it being Simulcast on both 2ST and Power FM.

Abc 666 Canberra is now Broadcast Bushfire update.
Same with thing Canberra Digtial Abc radio.

James Valentine will take over rolling fire coverage on ABC Sydney at 5pm.

Thats correct listening to it now. Angela Walsh, 2STs highlands mornings announcer is live from the Bowral studio to both Power Fm and 2ST. Their coverage is good.

The main 2ST/Powerfm studio is in a vulnerable location, hopefully they dont lose power/internet (or worse)

According to a post in the Facebook Radio Green room, Bruce Cassidy who was on air at PowerFM at the time of evacuation, said it was only a precaution, which I gather means the studios are in no direct immediate danger?

They’re lucky they have Bowral studios, but I’m not sure how safe that is either, I know someone who lives in the Southern Highlands (not sure exactly where) & he’s voluntarily evacuated his family to Sydney today.

I wonder how 2XL/SnowFM are going, I heard people in Jindabyne were being asked to leave yesterday, not sure if they can still use the old 2XL Cooma studios to broadcast from if needed or if they’re only offices now?

Yes i dont think they were actually evacuated from Nowra, it appears theres someone in the news room there still.

The Bowral studio is on Bong Bong st Bowral which is the main street so its not likely to be affected.

Correct, it has just been bushfire coverage on 774 all day. But it won’t hurt to tell listeners to use ABC Listen app or digital radio to listen to the cricket.

As noted elsewhere 2ST and Power FM are simulcasting, as are their sister stations 2EC/Power FM in Bega (with different programming to that of Nowra/Highlands)

Were they playing any music during their respective 2ST/2EC and Power simulcasts?

If so, I wonder which logs they used, as when Hit and Triple M Port Macquarie simulcasted during their fire emergency a couple of months ago, the music was all from the Triple M log.

My guess is the 2ST/2EC log.

I didn’t hear anything from 2EC and the respective Power FM but 2ST/Power were running what appeared to be the 2ST log and 2ST imaging with the announcers saying “on 2ST and Power Fm”.
Understandable as it was running from the Bowral 2ST studio, that log would already be loaded. There were still “Saturday night party mix” sweepers being aired.

Power FM has returned to its own programming this morning

Correct, both broadcasts were playing music from the AM station.

Listening to Power fm Nowra and 2ST Bowral at my location in Stanhope Gardens. Both stations have got great bushfire coverage almost on par with the ABC
2ST is advising people in Nowra to try 106.7 Ulladulla if the 999 transmitter drops out.
I would not have thought 106.7 Ulladulla would make it into Nowra.
I am assuming 91.7 2ST is off air because of the fires, can anyone confirm?

Correct. On my previous visits to Nowra, the 106.7 signal from Ulladulla does not get into there very well, even not at all.

They should be telling People to tune to 94.9 Power fm instead of a poor or non existent signal of 2ST from Ulladulla, unless they are south of Nowra around Sussex Inlet, still 94.9 would be a better choice.

BTW i98 bushfire coverage is road closures only in traffic updates. However their LA is not impacted by the bushfires.

I don’t think Huskisson- where 91.7 transmits from- was impacted by fire. It’s possible that there are power supply issues, though. I daresay many people in Nowra would already tune to it in preference to 999 AM.

I haven’t sampled the 2ST/Power coverage but it sounds like they deserve a (rare) pat on the back.
