Emergency Radio Broadcasting in Australia

Cogho on Triple M described the temporary transmitter as reaching about 40mins from Bendigo. Confirmed reception in Maryborough, Heathcote, Tennyson and Inglewood.

ABC Central Victoria have taken over from ABC Wimmera on 594AM, in addition to the low-powered 91.1FM transmission

It has appeared now at the same site, also with the same ERP as 91.9 at 1640w.

Do any of these large & important BAI R&TV sites or other major broadcast transmission providers that own transmission hosting buildings, that are surrounded by dense eucalyptus trees, have any external water sprinkler systems employed to protect the base of towers/feeders & TX/Generator buildings? Sure sprinkler systems require power & would need to be connected to an emergency battery system or some other redundant suitable generators that are themselves also protected by a said sprinkler system.

Sure all this costs money, but given the inconvenience to the larger communities when this transmission infrastructure is ‘regularly’ & periodically lost to fire, it would seam like an intelligent thing to consider. Admittedly someone has to pay for this extra protection & perhaps that is part of the problem.

I wouldn’t think so. Most don’t even have a regular maintenance program to clear fallen debris and clear gutters. The sprinkler systems you mention can effective and relative inexpensive in scope of protecting a single significant building, but for the transmission providers, there are so many sites they’d need to do it to that the risk of a once a decade loss is probably cheaper.

ABC Radio in SA running rolling coverage tonight of a bushfire near Cape Jervis - evenings presenter Spence Denny currently presenting.

Also going into NT due to them sharing an evening program with SA

Updated

Saw this on the coverage of the flooding at Longreach.

Based on Google maps etc this looks like the ABC Radio transmitter on left and 4LG on right. The v/o at the time said “waters rising”.

Map shows 4LG (red) and ABC in the background this is across the road from the Thomson River.

How many hours before landfall does the ABC usually commence rolling coverage of a tropical cyclone?

Because for whatever reason, not only does the Far North station not rolling (rightly or wrongly), it’s also not taking any of the official pressers live.

According to the ABC Far North schedules, Emergency Rolling Coverage is slated from 4am Friday.

ABC Far North for tomorrow:
4am-9am - Charlie McKillop
9am-2pm - Adam Stephen
2pm-6pm - Susan Graham-Ryan
6pm-10pm - Kaitlyn Sawrey

Morning shifts are coming from Cairns, while the afternoons shift will be coming from Townsville, and the evening shift will be coming from the Sunshine Coast

Other Northern QLD stations have their Breakfast programs as listed until 11am (presumably to allow resources that would be used for the North QLD Mornings program to be re-allocated to emergency coverage), however, the North QLD Drive program is still listed.

Apart from that, all other stations have normal programming.

Still with an obligatory break at the 6am half-hour for AM and the rural report.

Potentially dropped if there is already a bit going on at that point in time, one would imagine.

ABC Pilbara & Midwest/Wheatbelt are in rolling coverage of Narelle.

In Geraldton, ABC Classic has been replaced by LR.

ABC also aware of signal problems with Exmouth’s 1188 AM due to weather.

Has Perth flicked over to Emergency yet?
102.5 could be getting a workout in the coming days.
