Emergency Radio Broadcasting in Australia

They moved the broadcast to Hobart and Lucy Cuttting took over from 9am and will be on until 11. Sounds like it was short notice for getting Kim in but it was good with now finding out large mobile sites are out now too and water restrictions for some places so a definite rapidly evolving situation.

A couple of texts asking about where Macca was but I think this was much better.

To be fair, anything is better than Macca .

ABC Radio breaking into Grandstand in Adelaide throughout afternoon with updates on a bushfire near Penfield in the northern suburbs - being presented from the Adelaide studios by Suzy Ramone.

The entire town of Dirranbandi in Southern QLD (population 600-700 people) being evacuated tonight due to a large out-of-control bushfire on the edge of town.

Emergency Warnings (including some with the SEWS) have been airing on ABC Southern Queensland since late afternoon. Reporter Peter Gunders started a local program from the Toowoomba studios after the end of the Queensland Evenings program at 9pm.

Appeared as a late inserted top story on their 7pm TV news. Lots of dramatic still photos of the grass fire surrounding the town.

Zero coverage from the commercial TV 6pm bulletins.

@glen2006 what’s the update today?

Two emergency-level bushfires burning in Victoria at the moment.

ABC have launched into half-hourly updates airing statewide, breaking from Grandstand coverage.
I missed the announcer’s name, but top of the hour since 3pm is a cross to the state control centre, and on the half hour is a readout of current warnings for fires across the state.

Prue Bentley doing the double today for ABC Victoria - statewide drive until 6:30pm, then back on air (including Melbourne) from 8pm.

Edit: rolling coverage wrapped at 9pm with a number of fires downgraded - over to BBL/weekend evenings.

In contrast bushfire coverage fairly minimal today despite two evacuation emergency warnings in place and a few other watch and act areas. Probably trying to balance updates with not interrupting cricket coverage too much today.

ABC were doing very well yesterday with regular crosses to state control centre, weather updates, evacuation centre info etc. but not today during the hour or so I’ve had my ear out.

EDIT: Just after I hit send, Tyson Whelan giving a large statewide update from Melbourne.

Fox FM in Melbourne just had a Fire emergency warning at 4.35am.

ABC Radio in Victoria taking David Astle on analogue instead of BBL - lot of dry lightning around sparking fires, with a fair few emergency warnings in place.

Apparently going into Tasmania as well, presumably just online?

I would presume so - I guess the local team in Tasmania are off tonight for the public holiday

Seems to just be 594 Horsham taking David Astle/emergency warnings at the moment- 774 and the regionals I’ve sampled (Albury/Shepparton FM, 828 Gippsland, and 936 Hobart) are all back to the BBL (or never left the BBL to begin with in the case of Albury 106.5).

Huh - 91.1 Central Vic is on David Astle.

Wondering if there’s an east/west split of sorts with Wimmera, Central Victoria, Ballarat(?) and South West Victoria taking emergency coverage.

Edit: Hello to the ABC controller who’s switched Central Vic to the BBL at 9:40pm

ABC Far North and North Queensland have pre-empted Bludging on the Blindside and regular sports programming today for rolling coverage of the rainfall and flooding event occurring in the region.

Susan Graham-Ryan currently on-air from Townsville until 2pm. Adam Stephen from Cairns after 2pm.

Going by the Power100 Facebook page, they have been live since 6pm yesterday.

A perfect opportunity for 4AM and 4KZ to show the Caralis heirs the value of local programming. Plenty of wet stuff forecast for the KZ Network area too.

This system looks very concerning for Townsville (if it isn’t already). The consensus forecast shows no letup at all over the next week.

Also seems to be local coverage running on Star 106.3 and Triple M Townsville.

And local announcers providing updates on community radio Live FM and Triple T FM.
