Catastrophic fire conditions in New South Wales and southern Queensland this evening.

On ABC Mid North Coast, ABC Coffs Coast, ABC North Coast and ABC New England North West this hour presented by Tony Arthur from the studios of ABC Illawarra.

In Kempsey and the Mid North Coast, both SCA stations are running local programming, dumping networked drive shifts. Jason ‘Bodge’ Bodger currently on air on hit102.3/105.1, with Strawny on Triple M 100.7/106.7. On the Coffs Coast, hit105.5 and Triple M 106.3 are airing updates during Hughesy & Kate and Kennedy/Molloy respectively.

In Queensland, Sheridan Stewart’s program across ABC Southern Queensland and ABC Sunshine Coast continues with coverage.

Would be good to get an indication on what the Caralis stations are/aren’t doing if anyone is in a safe position to do so. Seeing a decent amount of updates on Facebook but no indication of what is going to air.

On Facebook, Radio 531/93.5 Kempsey was promoting their A-League coverage starting from 7pm, which seems like a poor choice given the circumstances

New South Wales:
Scott Levi has taken the reigns from the ABC Central Coast studios, with coverage continuing on the aforementioned NSW stations (Coffs Coast, Mid North Coast, New England-North West, North Coast).

Kristie has joined Bodge on hit Mid North Coast, while on Triple M weekends jock ‘Pommy Rich’ is providing support to Strawny.

Queensland:
ABC Sunshine Coast and ABC Southern Queensland are sharing coverage from the ABC Gold Coast studios, presented by Cathy Border.

Todd & Sami have extended their drive shift on Mix FM, while regular programming continues on Sea FM and Zinc 96.1. Hot 91.1 is airing music in lieu of the Random 30, with regular updates.

MW would be more helpful, AM even more so for most.

Nambour and Southern Downs freqs missing.

It’s prerecorded, they could dip into it any time they like.

Triple M and Hit Mid North Coast simulcast last night after about midnight. Good effort by the SCA team last night in Port. Credit where it’s due.

No word yet on what Radio531 is doing for the fires?

So it goes to show that regardless of having a heritage name or not it’s always localism that wins. Well done SCA.

I totally agree mate. Thumbs up to SCA, they seem to do this a lot better then some of the other commercials.

Is this the ABC John Scott or the John Scott who was on 4BC and owns a cafe or two on Brisbane’s northside?

Kate O’Toole hosted ABC Qld Sunday morning from 10 - midday. No mention of covering for Emma Griffiths, has she left the shift permanently or more leave?

I believe so - here is a link to is his ABC profile page.

Thanks, that’s the one who was on 4BC. A broadcaster with class.

If Tuesday pans out as forecast in eastern NSW, I’d expect you’ll get to hear plenty of stations doing live and local fire updates. A repeat of Black Saturday 2009 isn’t out of the question unfortunately. The conditions will be worse than those seen in Northern NSW on Friday and Sydney/Newcastle will bear the brunt of the heat.

I’m meant to be driving down to Newcastle for work on Wednesday. Not sure that will be happening now.

Depends if you have time to take a longer route?

Inland is no better than the coast as there are bad fires at Glen Innes and Armidale. There is also a fire in the Wollemi NP which could threaten the Putty Road tomorrow. It’s a long way from there at the moment but fires in conditions that are predicted for tomorrow can run 50 km or more in an afternoon (Black Saturday, also Black Christmas 2001 in Sydney).

I’d be keeping off any roads that traverse bushland tomorrow as they could get cut without warning.

The don’t even stream online which in today’s day and age should be mandatory, particularly for a commercial station in an area where it may be relied on for important information.
