Digital Radio - Technical

Such one-off changes have taken place, such as the ABC’s upgrade to its multiplex a few years ago, and changes to Kinderling Radio when it was around.

I’ve observed a scenario where when tuned to ABC Sport (DAB) if signal is lost such as in a carpark it retunes to Nova’s FM frequency.

The same thing has been demonstrated on 2 different car head units (VW and Mazda)
Any idea what settings within the multiplex would cause that to occur? Located in Melbourne.

In your tuner, in radio settings menu, for AF (Alternate frequency or Alt Band switching), is there a Allow/Not Allow switch?
Re FM, Nova 100.3 FM RDS PI code is/was: F100

Excellent analysis @Spi, thank you.

Such is the long running mindset in Australian radio. No wonder it seeks protection so frequently.

According to the annual report

The ABC contributed $5,315 towards the operational costs of DAB for the year to June 2023 (2022 $5,500).

$5000? They’d spend more on thinking about the Christmas Party!

Wondering if anyone can help… I am currently in South East Queensland and I can get DAB slideshows to show up on the Brisbane DAB Stations but it appears the Gold Coast DAB doesnt have any slideshows bar Hot Tomato itself? Can anyone see Gold Coast DAB Slideshows?

The only ones I can see that work are

Yeah as I thought. How weird, guess it’s an afterthought these days, only car radios and some small portables support it and their few and far between

Yep, that would be the main reason given so few radios support it and that they take a long time to load.

Depends on the connection strength to the DAB station.

I always thought it was due to so few bits being allicated to the images, so not much the strength of the signal.

That too.

Well I did have it as fortuitous signal from the beach at Caloundra. So a long way away

Your getting confused with FM RDS.
DAB slideshow if you don’t have a strong enough signal strength to decode that, you won’t get anything, it’s all part of the same data stream.

Gold Coast digital radio has been off since midnight.

Generator control issues at Mt Tambourine, a temporary generator has been bought in, but it has to be started & stopped manually & there was some mains power issues overnight.

I’m not sure how the GC DAB has been installed as far as mains power connections, maybe it can’t be used with the “plug-in” temporary generator, but everything else can be, but then the TXA techs would have to drive down from Brisbane to turn it on.

I know there were a few mains off/on periods, maybe the DAB didn’t like that & didn’t restart when the power came back, be-it normal supply or generator?

Thanks @anon71206228 and @TV.Cynic.

I still believe DAB+ engineering would be better handled by David Crane and the HT team, as with programming, engineering has shrunk at SCA Broadbeach.

20 years on, HT sounds great on FM and has all these years.
