Nobody is being insulting or patronising yet you’re the one being combative if anyone queries your speculation which is just that. Maybe you should follow your own advice.
Most will argue Billy boy doesn’t know how to run a radio network judging by the success of his current one….
I wonder are BOG firing up DAB+ stations when their competitors are selling advertising packages across FM & DAB+ and shutting them down when when the packages disappear? AM & DAB+ is a weird combo but it’s possible. I know other’s offer FM & DAB+ & Online specials from time to time. Obviously it would only be happening in Sydney for BOG. Could also be related to APRA music quota’s too or just plain technical such as no logs in the server.
Actually, no, there is a pattern on this forum of being treated disrespectfully when you have a different opinion so it’s fair for me to call it out for what it is.
There’s a difference between having a constructive debate, than being treated disrespectfully and being patronised. I guess it comes down to culture but some people on here need to learn to not patronise and to treat others respectfully. That’s how I see it.
Dance has been on the air for about a fortnight now, which is the longest it’s been running since at least 2019. Gorilla is also on and has been for quite a few months, which is good. FUN and Zoo are off the air still, although occasionally Zoo is on the air during the day.
Is Zhu’s Faded still playing on high rotation or has the log been refreshed and updated with say Swedish House Mafia’s Heaven which is getting a frequent spin on other dance stations?
I’d listen but don’t have a DAB radio handy.
I think it’s the same log that’s been used for the last month, but I’ll check this evening.
my original point still stands. If you see a post that you genuinely believe crosses the line, then please use the report function to flag it with the mod/admin team.
An article about the DRM tests around Wangaratta - Australia successfully tests DRM in AM/FM - RadioInfo Australia
I just heard Tiesto - Jackie Chan, followed by Example - Stay Awake. It must be the same log that’s been on air for over a month or longer.
Right I have read the crap and conspiracy theories about BOG DAB services long enough to want to make a comment.
There is no secret hidden agendas to their DAB services…
The guy who looks after it and is the kinda tech in Sydney is a very very busy man who wears lots of hats, including making sure everything coming and leaving the 2SM studios is working the best it can, panels John Laws does management stuff and the list goes on and on… The reason why the DAB stations tend to be off air is simply they run out of music, old mate doesn’t have time to notice they are off air and fix them, and frankly any complaints are mainly people off MediaSpy who ring and complain, so in the end the priority of keeping them on air is down the list of things that get done with the exception been 2SM as it is the primary service and does make the phones ring when it dies in the arse.
Hope that clears things up for everyone
Thank you for injecting some actual knowledge and common sense into this discussion.
Thanks for clearing that up.
As per @gordo92 's post, exactly what I said in the first place, no technical issues, simply just the playout runs out of music logs to play & they aren’t checked.
I surmised that, due to what I saw in the data streams at the DAB+ transmitter.
Thanks Brandon for the confirmation. Gotta love these forums, if only people listened to those who do actually know things, instead of going off with wild imaginary theories about things, with no experience.
While I believe you 100%, this is the weakest possible reason for the steam going offline that could only happen at BOG. Plenty of people are busy and still manage to do what needs to be done. It wouldn’t be that hard to set a calendar alert every 30 day or whatever to reload the music log - fairly quick and easy job especially if the same log of continuously used on repeat. If the DAB stations aren’t worth that effort then what’s the point of even having them?
Is that to say they’re not worth the effort? The reasons behind that are that the average listener would have no idea who runs the stations (and therefore who to call) especially given the poor online presence of these stations, and that’s if they’re even still listening to Australia’s most unreliable stations - when a station goes off air for weeks at a time not many are going to keep checking and then come back when it’s running again.
Gordo thanks for the info about BOG’s ephemeral DAB+ stations. Rightly or wrongly BOG get a lot of stick on here probably because posters have had a negative experience with them: I once enquired about a tech job with them and the pay and conditions on an old Howard era AWA were sub award and way below industry norms.
BOG are not alone with this stuff, TV such as WIN run along the same lines such as when they turned off 9 in regional WA during an affiliation dispute.
Gordo’s story basically confirms that BOG are running on the proverbial shoestring…:though it’s common everywhere to be short staffed with people wearing too many @hatdj ’s.
The comment about MediaSpy nerds being the only ones that give a toss is probably true, though. Even I rarely listened to the BOG DAB output; when I did it was merely to note where something had changed. Perhaps it would be just easier to switch them off for good.
The resentment for BOG probably stems from the fact that they are running on the smell of an oily rag despite the owner being a multi millionaire (billionaire)? But sometimes the more you have, the more stingy you are.
I think it is reflection of today’s society. If they get away with it and still make money they will. BOG have some dedicated staff but by the sounds of things not as many as the good old days.
I don’t think such a station would of survived in the 70s run like this? Given there are many more options for entertainment you can get away with it these days as not many people notice. Even I am talking about the shows on 2SM (besides John Laws), the announcers would not have the same staff as they would of had in the 70s and 80s. Today people are still willing to do it though. Marcus Paul gave us an insight on how much he had to do for his talk breakfast show (it was a lot!) . Yet if we rewind the clock back, I am sure Marcus would of had a team helping him.
I wonder in real terms is radio still earning the same money as it was back in the 70s. Or was it “so much more” due to less competition ? Perhaps it was assumed (back before the 00s) you had to have these staff to keep the lights on but as time went by XYZ left, let see if it will work without replacing them, then the next person went, Bob can do two roles he is smart etc etc. Then eventually you are in 2022.
That pretty much sums it up - often radio stations live without a tech because the transmitters are solid state, there are no cart or reel to reel machines and the playout server can be remotely managed. In TV, outside Sydney there is just a newsroom and news presentation studio in some places. In others there is nothing.
I have to keep reminding myself that most of my broadcasting skills are redundant and it still works without my involvement. The same would apply for a lot of production people as well as sales.
